Calling Craig fuel mpg?

Cam-Tech-Craig that is......got a question.....

I got a full tank of diesel into my car yesterday and its gone to the 463miles range and the dial is now full hard up and looks like it is working.

So my question is this - are the range numbers etc likely to work independently to the actual fuel gauge. I obviously ran out of diesel the other week whilst the car showed quarter of a tank, but never actually notice the range......

Just thinking out loud until I either fix it or play a bit more fuel roulette.......

Thoughts? all smug in my new plug!

i dont have Craigs years of experiance but i think the range is calculated on previous average mpg so if you only did a low average then the range will be smaller ... ... - .- -.

As Stan says - range is based on recent driving - not sure how far back it goes, but mine definitely changes if I've been doing motorway runs - I always fill to the brim and have range displayed - so I notice....

However - it also has to be connected to the fuel gauge somehow - there is only one sender in the tank telling the car how much is in there......

BTW - 463 Shocked I don't think I've ever had it display lower than 500 miles - and sometimes it's over 600 with a full tank.

I'd reset the trip counter & make sure you fill up before 400....

I concur with Stan & Alistair - the "range left" is calculated using the recent driving conditions/style - mine seems to take around 100 miles or so to "re-settle". 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

The mile per gallon is constantly evaluated, your fatty takes the fuel indicated on your fuel gauge the constant MPG then works out an estimated range...

So, if your fuel gauge is dicky then yes your range will be effected... Thumbs Up

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Alistair, don't think even on my London trips Ive ever seen higher than 485 ish..... you obviously have a lighter foot!! lol

See I'm just trying to work out if the guage is failing now and again as its gone full with a full tank now of about 60 quid but tbh its been difficult to get fuel in as its constantly cutting out the nozzle delivery......any views Craig? all smug in my new plug!

Seems very odd.....

For me a full tank is close to 90 L

For the cut out on filling - have to somehow triggered the mis-fuel guard thing & need to reset it with the yellow tool in the spare wheel well ?

I don't think I've ever achieved much over 500 - but for some reason the car can be optimistic when I fill up, but it's never been pessimistic enough to be in the 400's Whistle

Don’t forget the tanks got smaller from around 2016 to make space for the DEF tank. Think they may have shrunk by about 10 litres? 2016 SDV8 AB

If your having issues filling it then as Alistair said, check the anti tamper device... They are a PITA!!!

Just before lockdown, with little traffic on the road, I did 350 miles round trip on the motorway and still had a range of 180 left...ie a total of 530 miles.

Normally when filling the tank. The range is 430 ish.

I used cruise control, which normally gives a worse result than my foot, but with little traffic, the cruise control wasn’t sensing anything in front and therefore didn’t keep on hitting the brakes . Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

I thought they were for trying to put petrol in a diesel....is it for people trying to steal your fuel then? all smug in my new plug!

They are a mis-fuel device yes BUT! They can be triggered by a large pot hole too! As they are a sprung loaded device, they are prone to jolting!
