Brake pedal travel

Evening all

Nice easy question this one. How far does your brake pedal travel before you feel the brakes begin to apply?
My 2011 TDV8 4.4 seems to want to travel about half way before the brakes feel like they are beginning to apply. That’s far further than any other car I drive and doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
Now it is going into my independent garage on Thursday as I suspect the rears are not fully applying and it would be nice to have some input from other FFRR drivers as to what you find when you press your pedal. Hopefully better than mine

Mine is about the same. I replaced a seized caliper today and bled the brakes. Took it for a drive and the pedal is about halfway before it starts to brake. 2011 4.4tdv8 Vogue

Hi Gaz, thanks for taking the time to respond I was hoping with over 80 views to get a better response but there you go. I will let you know what I find out later this week once the garage has finished with it

My Td6 has the same amount of brake travel before it bites, have replaced both rear calipers as they were sticking.
Was hoping it might improve the brake feel once the callipers had bedded in the pads, but not noticed any real change.
Suppose it’s the way it’s meant to be. 2004 Autobiography TD6 Java Black

Gentlemen, many thanks for taking the time to respond. Sounds like the pedal travel is normal from what I'm reading. I'll post back here what the garage say after they have looked at it tomorrow, although I suspect it's going to be one of those "couldn't find a fault, and here is your invoice" conversations.

Hi Jordon, that's about what I would expect to be honest, in my case it's almost half way before you feel the brakes apply. My Freelander 2 on the otherhand has exceptional brakes, so much so that I headbutted the sun visor when I jumped in it to move it out of the drive the other day. I had become used to having to press the FFRR pedal so far before I had any brakes applying.

Mine (4.4 tdv8) travels about half way befor starting to bite ,which is about the same as the two previous ones, 4.4 petrol & 3.6 tdv8 being a ‘ off road ‘ vehicle , would you want breaks that would just lockup at the slightest sign of anything remotely slippy? I know I wouldn’t

Collected car from the garage this afternoon Turned out there was trapped air in the system that the computer bleeding process couldn’t shift so they went back to the old fashioned method and after a litre of brake fluid being pushed through the system all the air was removed. Brakes are 100% better, when I press the pedal now the brakes begin to bite after around an inch of travel, I’m now able to brake progressively.

glad you got it sorted
but by the amount of replies that consider half pedal travel as normal i would say
there are some poorly maintained motors about

Yes it does make you wonder, the responses didn’t really confirm how the pedal should feel as there seemed to be a mixture of answers. Now having mine fixed I can say that it feels as I would expect any cars brakes to feel especially modern ones with ABS etc. Perhaps a lot of people don’t bother having the brake fluid changed as part of the service schedule causing it to become less effective.

I agree I was almost thinking mine was abnormal with little travel 😂

There is honestly no material difference to any other car
