Steve - I highly recommend using the "Search" function on here = 6 link from the left in the brown banner at top. There is lots of info on here that you will find useful.

If it only smokes when pushed hard then it could need the turbo drain mod doing. Basically, if you don't open it up often enough, oil pools in the turbo and then gets pushed out next time you boot it. Search "turbo+drain+mod". for more info.
Costs about a £1000 to do at a good independent. Green Oval in Leeds have done a few. It involves drilling into the sump. LR should have designed it properly in the first place Rolling Eyes Some folks don't bother fixing it and just rev it hard (>2500rpm) more often Whistle

Also, any oil around front of engine could be the oil pump - small hex plugs can leak. Easy fix.

I've had 3 leaks on mine = the classic oil cooler gaskets and O rings in the "V", oil pump hex plugs and the secondary turbo was leaking. All fixed and a lot of Tesco points accumulated on the credit card Rolling with laughter

I would take it to a good, local independent LR specialist to you and get them to take a look Thumbs Up
Engine undertray needs removing and a good look round Bow down
Find them by putting "nottingham" in search etc

worth having a close look at the crankshaft seal, if your seeing any external oil loss with drips if the underguards are removed. very hard to see clearly with restricted access. Both of my 4.4 have had leaking Crankshaft seals.

if its smoking under hard load, as others have said, use it harder or get the oil drain mod done, if your doing that mod drop the engine and get the turbos checked, it will add about £1k to the overall bill, my circa 109,000 4.4 needed both turbos rebuilt, along with a host of other remedial works doing on. the EGR system and oil cooler. but now runs as it should.
if you drop out the engine, you can remove the sump to drill it which takes no time if the engine is out and saves worry on swarf.

Thanks for quick replies. Already running round with sump covers removed.

Done O rings on oil feed pipe, oil cooler gaskets in vee, front pulley oil seal after auxiliary belt got wrapped around pulley. The hex plugs on the oil pump sounds feasible as oil seems to come from behind a metal plate on front of engine.
Thinking left hand turbo faulty as get oil build up in pipe just before changeover valve.

So seems like 2 problems to cure.

My passengers side turbo was leaking oil. Rovertune checked it wasn't any feed pipes. It was weeping oil so I bit the bullet and had a new one fitted as the car is a keeper. I never had smoke on booting it either before or after new turbo fitted. I boot it daily up the slip road onto the dual carriageway Thumbs Up Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Take it to a specialist LR independent who work on these everyday would be my advice unless you have the skills and facilities to do it Thumbs Up Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

On RHD cars the primary turbo is off-side (i.e. drivers side) and secondary turbo is near-side

By LH turbo do you mean Near-side and off-side ?

I can't remember anyone speaking about primary turbo issues....

. Cheers, Greg

The turbo that I think is passing oil is the secondary (near side or L hand
It only smokes when revved above 2500 rpm 2017 sdv8 4.4 vogue

the oil can't drain sufficiently from the mostly unused secondary turbo and gathers.

a regular blast over 2500 can keep it in check.

otherwise it's modifying the sump which means drilling and tapping a higher drain point then fitting a new hose.

here's one of many threads discussing it:

It was mentioned earlier in this post about hex plugs on oil pump.
Where can these be found in relationship to crankshaft oil seal.
Will try to fix oil leak before turbo issue.
Have looked at posts on turbo drain mod and being from a automotive background think there must be an easier solution to this problem. 2017 sdv8 4.4 vogue
