Td6 l322. Coolant in inlet manifold

Thought my starter motor was on its way out and I removed the inlet manifold to replace it and there's water in the back two inlet pipes. I don't think it's the head gasket. Any way the water can get in there that you members know of?

The egr thermostat is coolant cooled. I imagine coolant is somehow getting into the exhaust recirculation pipe and is being carried through to the inlet manifold.
