05 RR NA with the Jag engine

I seem to able to find very little about these - are they any good? I know they were in (unsurprisingly) alot of jags but I know even less about them!
Are they the same engine as the 4.2 s/c just without the s/c?
Are they preferable to the bmw 4.4 or just different?
Thanks

I’ve had neither, but I seem to remember that the general consensus on here is that the Jag 4.4 is a “better” engine than the BMW unit.... not sure if it’s smoother or a bit more modern....

The BMW unit is much better if you want to install LPG or buy a car with LPG already fitted.

I’m sure more knowledgeable peeps will be along soon....

I am owner of a late 2005 l322 with the jag 4.4 engine with currently 150.000 miles. I have it for a year now, and the engine is smooth and reliable. The first owner who had it, installed LPG and the car runs on it for the last 20.000 miles.
There will be some people that will say that the bmw 4.4 is more torquey in the low range rpm's, but i drived both and I liked much more jag version. Engine is very similar to the 4.2 version, as they share most of the parts (timming chains, water pump, etc). For the tipical problems, the jag engine just doesn't seem to have any. They only do not tolerate poor lpg instalations.
Bmw unit is prone to noisy timming chains with worn guides, and leaking oil on the seals like most of the bmw units from that era, also, transmission on the jag unit (ZF6hp26) is much smoother and less prone to failures as per ZF5 that went with the bmw unit. Regarding all, both engines can run very high miles with regular maintainance Smile RR HSE 4.4 2006 LPG

I think the engine is terrific. I had six trouble free (yes!) years and am nervously comparing my new derv fuelled replacement.

The engine is never really stressed and on long motorway runs records more than acceptable fuel consumption. It will make a terrific noise when the accelerator is applied with enthusiasm. It's ULEZ compliant for London unlike its diesel contemporaries, too.

Find a well looked after example - they're a bargain right now.

The Jag engine is better imho BUT! The big BUT is the transmission on the later Jag engine is SOOOOOOO much better than the BMW transmissions!

That would be a good enough reason to buy the Jag over the BMW all day long as far as im concerned! Thumbs Up

United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 V8 Java Black

I spent ages looking into this & made my mind up by buying a late 2005 (2006 spec) 4.4 JAG with a 6 speed box. Nearly four years on & still pleased. Very Happy

Just touched 140k & still runs well. Definitely made the right choice going for a petrol rather than a diesel Thumbs Up

I wanted a jag 4.4 this time, mainly for the gearbox etc. I couldnt find one but would have much preferred it to the one I bought. 2005 E60 M5

I have had my 2005 Registered (2006 model) since January 2014. At the time I did not want a diesel as I was worried about the repair costs of turbos and injectors etc.. The mpg was not significantly different between an early diesel and as at the time nobody wanted big petrol engines the V8 was several tghousand less than a similar age, spec, mileage diesel so got a bargain. Bought with 93K and currently on 167K. Been serviced every 12k miles by my local garage and now by a friendly mechanic. Engine wise apart from normal oil, filters and plugs only other repauirs have been the tensioners (done early on) a leaging coolant pipe (about 2 years ago), a failed PCV last summer, o2 sensors last summer and yesterday a crankshaft sensor. Other issues have been brake lines and i had the gearbox refurbished after 18 months although i new this was on its way out when i purchased. I have also replaced many suspension arms and bushes ( i still have a low speed knock) and had about 4 sets of tyres. Most of the repairs are just normal maintenance and can be done by an enthusiast with the right info.

Added bonus is it is ULEZ compliant as I drive in to London and even if i gave it away for nothing depreciation has only cost about £1,500 a year. Just passed another MOT and emissions are still well below the limit even with the crankshaft sensor needing to be changed.

I average about 20 mpg and can get mid 20's on a run but I don't drive that economically so could probably do better if i was really bothered. (mileage dropped by about 2mpg average and 5 on a run with the EML light on caused by the sensor problem but seems to be improving again now it has been changed).

Biggest problem with mine is cosmetically it could do with some rust repairs and paint on the rear quarters.

Would recommend the 4.4 AJV8 based on my experience. There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

Are the touch screen versions the ones with the Jag engine? Only reason I ask is that I have a June 2005 registered L322 and I thought it had the Jag engine as opposed to the BMW one
Cheers
