anything that sounds like its spinning and not engaging suggests that the unit is knackered, in this case the starter motor.. ... - .- -.

May be worth getting down and dirty and checking all the earth cables. Also check the Positive is nice and tight and clean to the left of the battery where the postive to the starter can be disconnected. (Follow the positive and you will find it after about 10 inches or so.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to check the connections today - but was also thinking down the lines of a new starter motor Seen them on Ebay for about £200 - is this a good price ? |

Sounds like the pinion on the starter motor is not engaging. This points to the solenoid on the starter not flicking the drive gear forward onto the flywheel. Could be loose conection, or gunged up solenoid. |

I've just noticed exactly the same issue on my 2005 ffrr and was thinking it was linked to the starter motor, girlfriend noticed the other morning that it wouldn't start up first thing and then later that day tried it myself and it was doing exactly as u described, keep updated on how you go on, mine seems to be working ok at the mo, touch wood!! |

I've done a few long journeys recently (150 miles +) so maybe the battery voltage was a bit low ? Anyway - fingers crossed and we will see |

thats it, we get this on older tractors, usually happens in cold weather when the lube is thick / gunged up, usually if the motor is removed and a squirt of silicone lube sorts it - the pinion needs lube or it can stick |

Yep, i had this occasionally during a 'cold' spell - ignition back to 0 then try again and it starts. First thought were battery but was told (as a non technical, dirty diagnosis) to leave door open and see what happens to interior light - no change to brightness.
