Burnt smell

Hi,

Jumping straight back in to this pool of knowledge hoping someone might help....

Owner of a 2011 4.4 TDV8 since 10 days and have noticed a "burnt" smell coming from the car.

Can best be described as the smell of burnt slip plates/discs on a manual transmission and its coming from the wheel arches - mostly the front.

Have read threads about the oil cooler leak in the "V" but as I understand it this has a really "bad" smell? This smell is more burnt rubber than oil...

It has been confirmed that my car is "sweating" oil from the cooler but no one seems to think its anywhere near bad enough to do anything about it yet (two are LR indy specialists).

I dont know if it has anything to do with it but I do have a few fault codes;

* P2264-00 Water in fuel sensor circuit (had this on my disco 4 and just changed sensor and housing) - car goes intermittently into restricted performance

* P244B-58 DPF Differential Pressure too High (Bank 1)

I had all fluids changed a few days ago - transmission, both diffs and transfer case as well as new engine oil.

Any ideas what this can be?

As always, much grateful for all replies! RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

If you have a burnt smell, take the car for a run and try not to use the brakes, or be a gentle as possible. Then feel the rims inwards on the wheels to see if you have a hotter one than the others. That may indicate a sticking caliper or brake bit.

If not that, exactly when does the smell occur? From cold, when stopping after a short run from cold etc.? Does it smell like diesel burning? Is it stronger on one front side or the other?

Water in fuel, did the garage change the fuel filter? The sensor is on the bottom of the filter housing and the connection could be a little suspect. It's an old style spark plug connector, remove it and drain some fuel. Have a jar on the ground with a pipe to it and open the drain on the filter t see if any water is in there. Mine has this occaisionally, but not found any water yet. Clean the sensor contacts and refit.

DP too high, what's your diagnostic tool and have you a yellow warning on the dash? Cheers

Most DPFs give off a very distinct 'burning smell' as they try to regenerate..

I'd be tempted to take it for a long motorway cruise and see if that sorts out the DPF differential pressure error, and, once the regen is complete, the burnt smell...

@rjff; Thakns for the tip, will try checking the brakes! Rear pads were replaced a few days ago but smell is more prominent in the front. I assume then that it´s not possible to see of there is a sticking caliper if I get the car on a ramp?

I dont have an IID tool yet, the fault codes were logged during the PPI. I get a yellow warning light and RP intermittently but I just assumed this was because of the Water in Fuel sensor as the symptoms, or lack thereof, is the same as on my Disco.

@ctjbfb the car has done almost 1.300 motor way miles in the last week so that should hopefully have taken care of any regen issues? RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

Getting enough grip on the water trap of the fuel filter, or removing the filter is difficult due to lack of space, but it only takes 5 minutes to remove the air filter box, and with it out of the way working on the fuel filter is much easier.

You could tell if a brake is sticking when the car is on a ramp, it will perhaps be felt as catching while rotating the wheel. However if the brake is only lightly rubbing, then it may require a run to check for a rise in temperature.

+1 with Mike on the fuel filter water drain and removal.

If you do check for water, a 5mm ID silicon or soft hose will fit, attach the other end to a cane (bamboo or plain stick to help guide the hose down to the ground. Insert into a clear bottle and you can see if any water is present. Thumbs Up

Idea Burnt smell further thoughts. When does the smell occur? Just after you start the car with the engine cold and/or do a short run with the engine cold from start? Cheers
