Auto Vs Command Shift - 1st to 2nd? Differences? 8sp TDV8

Hi all

Since my flush / gearbox reset I've had some strange behaviour most likely related to the learning process. However something doesnt seem to be improving and I'm trying to work out if it is normal behaviour or not. I didn't have the car long enough before having the flush to recall what it was like before.

So, from a standstill, gentle acceleration through 1st to second. In auto, when it changes to 2nd the revs hardly drop back at all. But if I do the same thing with the paddles the difference is more significant.

I'd love to know if this is normal and happens on them all. Or whether this is a sign of an issue.

No errors on the IID tool. Mine is a 2012 TDV8. 1 week since flush/reset, about 200miles covered, mixed driving. Tried some procedures to help with learning.

Hi M@r]{,

I’ve also got a 2012 TDV8 and have observed the following:

1) when the drive train is cold the shifts between 1/2 are noticeable, can be felt and I deem it clunky.
2) when slowing down, for example, to a Roundabout and the car shifts down, the lower the shift - from 4/3 or 3/2 I can feel it ‘clunk’ - happens when hot or cold.
3) when accelerating at road legal/perfectly normal speeds, the gear box shifts whilst revs are maintained at approx 1800-2000 rpm through the lower gears until it can settle down in a higher gear and much lower revs. I don’t like this, it’s not like normal 4/5 speed auto boxes I’ve had before. It almost feels like it’s a CVT transmission, where the revs are held. But the shifts are seamless. Kinda as you describe.
4) I prefer command shift as I prefer to ‘change up’ normally before the car does (sometimes it won’t let me)
5) gearbox oil was changed by LR 20k ago.
6) when cold the box makes the car feel like it’s ‘hanging’ a much discussed topic by Dodge Ram owners.

To summarise, I think they are a good gearbox but need to be warmed up first.

Hope that helps,

Thanks both

Bushy: if I find myself over Oxfordshire way I may take you up on that, thanks for the offer
Tommy: so sounds like mine is reacting the same as yours, so suggesting this is normal behaviour. Although on normal use when cold I'm not getting the clunks / rough changes. The odd one maybe, but I think that is down to it learning still.

I know the gearbox holds on to gears longer when the engine is cold, to help it warm up quicker. It’s designed to do that.

It can also skip gears when changing down, say go from 5th straight to 2nd for example.

Might explain some behaviour?
