L322 gearbox gearbox driveshaft failure

Hi
O have an 03 3.0 diesel l322
The gearbox drive has twisted and failed see picture.
This is the second time in 9 months that this has happened.
Both times it failed under load.
Any ideas as to what is causing this is it a common problem or is there an upgrade?

Thanks

Coco,

Check out RR Phil’s posts on here. He is GOd when it comes to gearboxes along his expertise is on the petrol BMW version, but still lots of good advice and pics. Thumbs Up

Mine did exactly the same a couple months ago! Makes a horrible noise doesn't it Very Happy

Root cause for mine was identified by Birch Motors, based on them having seen it happen a couple of occasions in the past. Diagnosed as a spurious fault in the gearbox ECU. Basically as you're accelerating away, the ECU randomly tells the box to go into engine braking mode. So as I understand it, you have the engine trying to accelerate, and the gearbox trying to add engine braking. Something has to give....

The bad news is that a new gearbox ECU is ~£500 from LR; Birch fitted a known good second hand one to mine, which cost £40.
