Where is RR design language heading? And do we like it?

------ slight reboot of this thread: https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic53489.html -----

So I saw this:

Think it looks pony, and although it seems it's just an magazine's mock up, it got me thinking about where the Range Rover design language had been heading.

But before we get onto the 405's successor, let's rewind a bit.

As far as I'm concerned, the 322's design shook the ground on arrival.

But I'm sorry but I just don't buy the McGovern design language; I don't particularly like Evoque's. Fine, I'm not planning to buy one. Plenty of others have and best of luck. But whilst popular, the problem is that was McGovern's project which is what all RR's are based on now.

All I see on Evoques is a headlight that doesn't fit the hole they made. Same with the taillights.

Elsewhere, more that doesn't make sense, for example the 405's tail lights are just confused:
Lone designer: Guys we need to stack the lights, that's a Vogue hallmark.
Gerry: We need to smudge them horizontally into the body like the Evoque.
50 meetings later: we've found a solution that can do both, don't worry.
Lone designer: Errr not sure guys. it looks like an L bracket that hold up shelves.
Gerry: We're doing this, It'll work.

Can't unsee that now, sorry .

The other poorly thought out 'feature' is the trim under the rear tail light:

Gills in the door? Not sure. Maybe, can't make up my mind. Whilst doesn't offend, never made too much sense.
Flicking back that line along the bottom of the doors? Ok sure.
Connecting that to the bottom of the lights? Looks a bit powerpoint to me.

Best way to deal with that whole trim is to colour code it the lot, it's not something to show off.

Now whilst we're in the vicinity of the tilt lights:

Had to do it. That bit just annoys me.

Next post to come: Interior.

. Cheers, Greg

Remember the Evoque was actually the LRX, which was the work of Jeremy Waterman and Julian Thomson - it’s a very good design, but I still don’t see them as Range Rovers. Can’t imagine Gerry risks getting felt tip on his Henry Poole much these days, but it’s obvious that there are people who are actually bothered by what they’re doing in the design department - what is annoying (aside from the general slide away from the appeal of the original car) is the supposed focus on “reductive” design, which apparently doesn’t preclude entirely pointless elements like the RR door vents and lower trim, the Sport bonnet and wing vents (and that awful bit of blind plastic mesh in the back bumper) and so on.

What I really don’t want is a bigger Velar.
