I noticed yesterday that when the engine was idling and I got out there was a metallic rattle coming for the engine. Sounds like some kind of heat shield or something that might have worked loose?

Before I take it in just wondering if anyone has any thoughts about what it could be as might be simple fix?

It's a TD6 - they all sound like that

Without having your car in front of us it's kinda difficult to diagnose an odd sound...

Could it be a heat shield or something has worked loose?

 

Two possibilities spring to mind.

Heat sheild over the exhaust manifold.. needs the air box to be removed to get in to it.. which needs the inlet manifold removal.

More likely though is the dust sheild on the back of the brakes rattling on tickover... you can give this a wiggle / poke through the wheel to check. If it is this the guard gets fatigue around the bolt and snaps. It is possibel to cunningly remove the bolt and slide a large washer in then refit without having to pull off the wheel / disc and caliper.

Is a TDV8 MY2011, done 4,200 miles. Understand it could be many things and difficult without actually being there hearing it. I only heard it yesterday (but then not often out of the car with engine running.

Hmm, interesting on the brake cover - I did clean the wheels on Saturday and poking the brush through was quite tight as got Brembos on 19" wheels so not a big gap. Might have possibly knocked this and it's now rattling.

Just a bit annoying on new car to have rattle like that. If all else fails will just head to dealer and get them to sort it.

i had this problem yesturday and when i looked it was the dust shield on the front drivers brake had come loose i did what elpeede says you should do "RANGEISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED"

Fingers crossed it's the brake disc cover, seems like it could be the most likely thing. I will check tonight when I get home, when it will still be light I hope (the good thing with the clocks going forward!)

I had to do my nearside disc cover last night.............all quiet now

All seems ok now. Started the car and seemed ok. Did give the brake cover a little prod too.

Hi , I had exactly the same noise , rattling on idle and also after you blip the throttle on run down.

I checked all the heat shields and in the end it was the front catalytic convertor.
