405s with high ish miles

On perusing some of the classifieds, I see that there are several 405s 4.4s around the hundred thousand miles mark, for reasonable money. Razz
As I only do about 5 thousand miles a year, mainly tugging the tin tent around, could they be a good buy?
What do others think?
And what should I look out for on a highish miles 405?

As the owner of 100K miles 4.4 I find it very depressing Laughing

I'm very happy with mine & have no real interest in changing. Look out for the usual - paper servicing - particularly the major ones.

My personal test is that all 4 tyres should be matching & premium brand - if I find anything else I assume costs have been cut.....

Mine is just about to pass 70,000 miles after 25 months and I’ve every intention of running it for many years yet. Well maintained, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t clock 300,000 to 400,000 miles (or beyond) before it’s worn out Thumbs Up Just ask any of these people:

It’s all down to the car’s history.

The only undeniable downside is the majority of the warranty companies that tend to choose either 100,000 or 120,000 miles as an arbitrary cut off point, despite these numbers being relatively meaningless. For instance, it seems bizarre that Land Rover’s own scheme will warranty a 10 year old with 99,000 miles, but not a 3 year old with 101,000 miles.

Is the 4.4 the better motor to have?
I've heard some horror stories about the 3.0 chewing cranks etc Shocked
The 4.4 would be my preference anyway Thumbs Up

A lot of people are very happy with their V6’s. It makes a nice noise, uses less fuel (around 4-5mpg in practice), is apparently as fast as the TDV8 in the L333, but crank failures are, sadly, well documented.

The V8 has a better low end power delivery, crank failures are unheard of and the car comes with much more powerful, 6 pot, front brakes, is obscenely quick for a diesel 4x4, will corner a good deal more flatly (despite weighing 200Kg more) and has a locking rear diff to make it “extra sticky” Rolling Eyes

While I’d have liked it to have come from Dagenham, it does at least have the added bonus of annoying Donald Trump Laughing

The V6 also requires a cam belt change, while the V8 has the most over engineered cam chain and gear drive we’re likely to see in a car engine:

I'm sure it's great, but the 4.4 V8 exists - therefore I could not bring myself to even test drive a 3.0 V6 Embarassed

I test drove a V6 and then took a V8 out. I had only turned it through 180 degrees in the dealer’s car park when I knew that there was no choice to make. Many say that the V6 has all the power you ever need; true, but on that basis a 2 litre four has “all the power you’ll ever need” Rolling Eyes

It’s all down to the power delivery and you don’t need to exceed 15mph to notice the difference Very Happy

I don't know much about the 5.0 but they generally have lower mileage - as much to do with economy/cost as anything else.

That car looks tidy IMHO - no tow bar if that's important to you.

Not my favourite wheels & clear glass - but easily changed if that's what you want.

High mile, premium vehicles are usually run by MD's of a company, serviced through a maintenace plan so could be a good purchase.
Don't need a towbar and as you say glass and wheels could be done later.
The most important thing I look for is low owners and a full service history.
As with all these FFRR's, I feel sorry for the owners trying to sell and the depreciation is Big Cry Big Cry but attractive if you are purchasing Range Rover 2002 P38 4.6 Vogue

I'm currently in the process of buying a 90,000 mile one owner full MD service history L405 from a main dealer, upon reading various blogs I have asked for a two year warranty (given) a service and fresh MOT (given) all paint scratches touched up (completed) and an update to the satnav (£180).

I asked the dealer for the brake fluid to be changed as it did not appear on the service log (done free of charge) and I would assume that it should have been.

Reading the blogs and posting on FFRR I wanted to know about the transmission fluid and Dif fluid changes, main dealer advises not needing to be completed although chat reckons 80k or 5 years.

First initial impressions rides flat, no knocking from suspension, everything works (infotainment maybe slower than a new car) and the 4.4 v8 diesel pulls like a train.

The previous owner was fastidious with maintenance and had all work carried out by the local dealer who sold me the car.

Full service history documented, two year warranty and a good test drive. Thumbs Up

The dealers will say that the transmission fluid is for life, but the gearbox manufacturer disagrees. I changed mine at 24 months / 66,000 miles. Don’t know about the diffs...
