I'm pleased to be back in the fold - I had a string of Range Rovers over the last 20 years or so, and foolishly when I siold my 4.4 Westminster a couple of year ago I opted for a change and bought a 5 series Touring. Lovely car but not in the same league as a FFRR...

So, I've just sold the BMW and have found a lovely MY2017 L405 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography that I will be taking delivery of very soon.

The car is fitted with 22" Turbine Alloys, which look great but aren't going to be much use in snow and ice, so I am planning to buy a set of wheels with winter tyres.

My question is - What is the optimum rim size for winter tyres? I am assuming they work better on 19 / 20 " rims?

(Also, will the different rim size affect the speedo / mileometer readings?)

Im not sure why you think 22’s will be poor in winter.

Sidewall height makes no difference other than allowing you to run smaller rims - which you are less likely to kerb if you get things a bit wrong.

There’s an argument that a narrower tyre cuts through the snow better, but I really can’t see 255 vs 275 making that big a difference

I’ve run winter 22’s for a few years now and for the last 2 winters have lived in a ski resort with weekly airport trips - so far, I haven’t had to fit my chains.

It’s ice and cold wet tarmac that make the biggest difference, most 4x4 tyres are ok in fresh snow.

As long as you stick yo the OE tyre sizes, the rolling radius is the same, so no changes required

Just went through the same thing... I didn't want to run the 22" turbines for lack of tire options, ruining them, little narrower tire and I like a bigger side wall in the snow for protection/ride quality. I went with 20" 502 style wheels. I fit blizzak 255/55/20. If you have the 6 piston brakes these wheels will work.
