I was told by my local dealer today that i could take a land rover extended warranty.. he has sent me a policy book and it seems like a good one.. Is it worth it? Regards

It's like any insurance policy; when it needs to be called upon it's great and of not used, seems a waste.

The Land Rover one is pretty decent.... I "waste" money every year buying a Land Rover extended warranty which includes breakdown cover and MoT failures.

The exclusion of wear and tear would give me pause for thought on the LR warranty. I myself use Warranty Direct who do include wear and tear. Maybe get a couple of other quotes and compare coverage?

Wow warranty direct is crazy money.

If you feel a need for warranty, we've had/ bought LR Extended Or Select warranties continuously since 2005 and have not found a better warranty provider (there might be of course).

Not the cheapest, not everything nailed on covered, although in our experience = excellent... And if you go for the LR warranty, the reality is (we have found) that if the warranty provider won't cover something, there is a higher probability of LR covering you anyway... because of the good will argument.

I would be concerned about how well " pre existing faults" would be dealt with. My experience of warranty companies and JLR makes me think that they would avoid paying on anything engine related blaming it on the porous block.

So my block has be found to not be porous. Regards

I am looking at this at the moment. The three downsides of the LR scheme seem to be:

1. Excluding wear & tear, without specifying what fair wear & year might be.
2. You’ll need to pay for investigation and dismantling before a claim can be agreed (or not!).
3. What they consider as “Design faults” (which they exclude) are not listed at purchase. We all know about the crank exclusion on the D4, but what about the surprises elsewhere?

To get WD up to a worthwhile standard of cover is unbelievably expensive and based on previous experience, where they instantly declined a claim for a wheel bearing on a 3 year & 3 month old MINI (saying it was “wear & tear” - despite it being their big claim that it’s included), I don’t trust them. I certainly wouldn’t want to have to pay out on a big claim in the hope that they honour the warranty before the credit card bill arrives! At least the LR scheme pays the garage direct.

I’ll contact the LR scheme and ask them what they consider to be “design faults” on my SDV8 and what they might consider as “fair wear & tear” on a 3 year / 100,000 mile old Fatty, before I go with them.

The LR Extended/ Select Warranty is administered by a company called Car Car Plan (CCCP). When seeking reassurance as to whether or not they were declaring the L405 3.0 TDv6 to have a crankshaft design fault, the following response was received from CCCP:
“The Land Rover Approved warranty is designed to offer protection against sudden mechanical or electrical failure for almost all components fitted to your vehicle, subject to the vehicle being maintained within the manufacturer guidelines. However, the warranty specifically excludes design faults, as detailed on page 12 of your warranty booklet. If a claim were presented under the warranty that was found to be a design fault, it would not therefore be covered. As administrators of the warranty, we are therefore unable to provide you with the reassurance that you seek.”

“I have therefore asked for a member of the Land Rover customer services team to contact you and discuss what the process would be for rectifying design faults.”

In our case, LR CS did not declare the crankshaft to be a design fault. LR CS did confirm in writing that if during any period of LR Extended Warranty cover the crankshaft fails - and for whatever reason the warranty provider (CCCP) declines to cover the crankshaft - then LR UK would cover the full cost of any necessary repairs. For that reason, we still have the 3.0 and have taken the “LR Extended Warranty”.

Ps... in 14 years we have never ended up paying an LR main dealer to investigate/ fault find only to be told that fault has been found but it’s not covered under the warranty.

There’s an important tip to avoid “free health checks”

Looking at Stan’s very helpful link, it would seem that all worn steering and suspension bushes are likely to be excluded as wear & tear items too. I wonder if split CV joint boots would be excluded too?

I’ve been looking at WD and the LR administered scheme for some time and I need something to cover me from 100,000 miles (3 years old), for as long as possible. Both schemes have their advantages and disadvantages but, looking at some of the exclusions, keeping the money in the bank is looking like a surprisingly tempting option now!

I seriously considered not buying a warranty when my last D4 reached 3 years of age. Thank goodness I gave in to my belief in Sods Law. The LR extended warranty I opted for paid out over £4,500 for a new turbo unit and labour a month or so later.
