Let me down big style today.

2005 FFRR Diesel 83,300 miles regularly serviced.

On my way to have some lunch today on a dual carriageway @70MPH when all of a sudden 'Ping' 'Trans Failsafe Prog' appears on the dash display. Limped to a stop, engine off, wait a while, start engine, no message, engage drive but nothing, no drive at all in auto or manual select. Luckily I have breakdown cover so was able to get the car brought home at least.

I thought the trans failsafe was a mode that let you carry on to your destination (even though slowly) but I have no forward drive at all.

This has come at a bad time for me, I've already replaced the turbo and fuel pump and two new tyres. This new problem might tip me over the edge enough to make me want to sell, I love the car but it's costing me a shed load to own.

Is this problem likely to be a major gearbox fault? The recovery company (AA) disconnected the battery for 10min to re-boot the systems but this had no effect.

If this is a major gearbox problem can anyone point me to the guy on here who re-builds auto boxes.

I don't know exactly what your symptoms are likely to suggest but would advise at least it is plugged in to a Landrover diagnostics before you go any further.

I spent no small amount on my box to avoid exactly your scenario.. more so as I didn't want it to let us down abroad on our main holidays. I too feel the pain of the continious service costs.. I did the Turbo myself if I hadn't I'd definately be well over the edge by now.

There was a chap on the Rangerover.net who was rebuilding ZF boxes up in the north east I think RRPhil. Has yours got the ZF or GM box? I'd guess GM?

Have you had the front prop recall done?

Could also be a failed CV joint. Both of these can be quickly elimnated with half an hour with the jack. 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS

I'm ringing my local trusted independent RR repair shop tomorrow.

I don't know, mine has the BMW engine

Yes

I hope so

If this turns out to be terminal can anyone recommend a good company who can supply a re-con auto box?

martyn, as said RRPhil takes these, ZF anyway gearboxes apart and rebuilds them for a hobby he only charges you for the parts, last quote he gave for a complete gearbox rebuild was around 600 ££££`s which is bloody good. why not give him a try.
good luck my friend. ONE LIFE LIVE IT

from what i rememeber RRPhil only rebuild the ZF gearboxes, in the TD6 diesel it is a GM gearbox not ZF. Not sure if he fixs the GM box

Good Luck!

The power gradually diminished from 100% when the message first appeared to 0% over about 3/4 of a mile. I did not want to stop immediately due to the hazardous traffic conditions on the dual carriageway but in the end I was forced to do so due to not having any more drive. It just sat there, if you blip the throttle when the gearbox was in 'D' the car did not move one inch.

Anyway it's at the repair place now so I should have a diagnosis soon, fingers crossed it's not to expensive but I doubt it with my luck lately.

Right

Got the car back today. Now I'm £1,900 lighter.

The torque converter had gone t**s up so a re-con box was fitted. I also have to return to the repair place after a further 1000 miles for a partial gearbox oil change (another £150) otherwise the 12 month guarantee will be void.

Cavendish Motors of Chesterfield, an independent Landrover repair centre who I trust. They are my regular garage for servicing ETC. They price matched the best quote I received from other gearbox specialists.
