So the time has come. Had my 2012 MY 4.4TDV8 Vogue for a couple of years now and would like to up grade before the value plummets any further. I do a lot of heavy towing in connection with my business so need power and torque - both of which the 4.4 delivers in spades. My heart says 4.4 TDV8 L405 and my head says 4.5V8 diesel 200 series Land Cruiser. The Range Rover has more toys and a more up to date look but the Land Cruiser has much better build quality and is more comfortable on a long journey - the seats are like sitting in your favourite armchair in your living room - I previously had a 100 series Amazon and I still miss that beast. Down side is the price of a 200 series - they don't half hold their value. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!!

So far the best I have been offered for the RR is £12000 as a trade in against a 2013 Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8 with 69000 miles on the clock - I need to put about £19500 along with mine. For a 2008 Land Cruiser, one owner with 66000 miles I would need to put £20500 along with the RR ( offered £9000 for RR ). As the Land Cruisers get younger the price sky rockets!! Heart says RR and head says Land Cruiser. Major problem is I really like both.

Sell your FFRR privately and have a few more pound to look around ?? 2015 4.4 AB

So..... would I swap my L405 for a 5 year older Land Cruiser ? not a chance.

You’ve really answered your own question. Although I’m an L405 owner myself and it’s a good car. Personally there’s no other 4x4 I would want to own. But mine doesn’t have to serve a purpose. If I had to think about using a 4x4 for particular duties such as a lot of towing or a lot of off road work I’d choose the land cruiser all day long. They don’t hold there money for any other reason than they’re bloody bulletproof and a more than capable off roader.

This thread had me looking at Land Cruisers in particular the model Defender Dave is looking at. I am gobsmacked by the price differential between RR and LC. Are they really that much better, I tow 90% of the time and although a Range Rover diehard, I could be tempted by reliability. As said earlier they must hold their value for a reason, cost of ownership??? Not meaning to Hijack the OP's thread but has anyone some real world experience?, cheers

Toyota Landcruisers are the best tow car I have owned.
Generally reliable, unless spanner waving chimps gets at it!
Expensive on parts in some cases compared to LR.
Can really work hard all day everyday.

Would call myself a LR enthusiast, but if I had to rely on a vehicle to tow everyday, Toyota would get my money.

Current D4 is great, just previous Landcruisers did it better.

No comparison on quality, values are for a good reason. RR for posing Toyota for getting there and back.

Over the years I have towed with a variety of vehicles - Defenders from the old turbo diesel ( actually pre Defender days ) to the Pumas and a few Discoverys to boot ( Series 1 to Series 3 ). Land Cruisers from the 3 litre Colorado to the D4D LC3 and most recently the 4.2 diesel Amazon. Without exception the towing ability ( usually at the 3.5 tonne gross ) of the Toyotas was much better than the Land Rovers - except, that is, until I got my hands on the 4.4 TDV8 L322. Power, torque and comfort in abundance. Downside - more faults in less than 2 years than I had with 4 Land Cruisers probably over 10 years. I recently tried a 200 Series V8 diesel Land Cruiser and I was very impressed with build quality and comfort - not so with the price. As has been seen in this thread they don't half hold their value. Nothing in this life is black and white. I am a total Land Rover nut and have been since about the age of 5 years old. I also love Land Cruisers and with towing so much for my business I have to weigh up all the options - I think what I'm saying is a few more sleepless nights before I come to a decision as to what to change to. The great thing about this forum is the variety of thinking which cam be brought to a topic or problem. Thanks again Gentlemen.
