Premature alternator failure or something worse?

Weird one today.
Drove car about 80 miles this morning and parked up to go into a shop, when car was driven afterwards the battery light was coming on intermittently.
Parked up again for about an hour and when car was started again the battery light stayed on permanently, after about 20 minutes of driving things started shutting down, warnings about gearbox modes unavailable and limited gears available.
Then while heading for a nearby layby the battery light went out and stayed out.
In the layby i turned off the ignition and restarted the car.
Drove home the 80 miles with no issues or warning lights at all.
Alternator and battery are both about 2-3 years old.

Has anyone else experienced similar and is there something else other than the alternator that could cause this issue?

When i get a chance i’ll hook up the IID tool and multi meter check the alternator efficiency but really hope its not that as i’ve only just healed the wounds from changing it the last time.

On the plus side i got a set of 20” L494 alloys for £160 which was the main reason for todays journey.

Might be worth checking the various cable connections to the alternator and battery, you might be lucky and simply have a cable / connection problem.

Well got back from offshore on Thursday night so got the chance to look properly.
While away i ordered a new alternator.

So started removing all the bits and pieces to get access to the alternator and with a view of it appearing there was evidence of scorching and evidence of heat/fire!
Go the alternator out and it was clear that there had been a lot of heat as the power terminal was scorched with signs of excessive heat!
Not impressed with this being only 2 or so years old!
Looks like I dodged a bullet.

Anyway new unit is a branded Denso so all installed and fired up, battery light disappeared and a fine 80 odd mile run today with a small trailer hooked up for part of the journey and all back to normal.
Maybe shows the price difference between branded and non-branded could be worth it, although when i got the last alternator it was a rush job as the first one i ordered didn’t fit and i went to a local auto spark to get the replcement.

Heat/burning on an electrical connection is a sign of high resistance which is often just a case of it being loose.
As Nicedayforit says it's worth checking connections after something has been installed for awhile as they can come loose especially if bolted.
