Transfer box neutral warning message

Flashed up earlier on, but didn't seem to be accompanied by loss of drive. Luckily I was just outside my work, so backed off the throttle and coasted in. Reversed into my usual space no problem, pulled it forward again, reversed again, no problem. Just taken it into the workshop and back out again (different story) and there were no problems there, either. Glitch in the matrix, or should I now be worried? 2003 Vogue TD6/1992 Classic 300TDi/2x 1991 Golf GTI/1966 Volkswagen Kombi/2x 1968 Volkswagen Kombi/Probably something I've forgotten...

You didn't knock the Hi/Low range switch by mistake (causing the "Put gearbox into neutral" message) ?

No, I've done that deliberately in traffic and seen that message before. This definitely said 'Transfer Box Neutral'. Just flashed up for a moment and was gone. 2003 Vogue TD6/1992 Classic 300TDi/2x 1991 Golf GTI/1966 Volkswagen Kombi/2x 1968 Volkswagen Kombi/Probably something I've forgotten...

Mine looked more like black treacle in colour, nearly black but still translucent, but not that thick in consistency Smile .

If this appears its more than likely to be the electric motor that actuates the hi low. Mine has done it from time to time-ive removed it. Tested it on a bench and replaced it and it works fine. Theres a sensor inside it thats suppposed to communicate pretty mush saying what position its in and if its working. This sometimes plays up causing this issue. As i said before-three bolts undoes it and one electrical connector. Just by removing it putting 12v across it a little lubrication and refitting it has always worked for me. the other option is to pay £700ish for a new one. The sensors cant be purchased seperately.

Just started to have this problem myself Sad

Googled it and came back with a couple of solutions from a different forums.

http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/6-range-r...nging.html

http://www.justanswer.com/car/2rs18-04-ran...ng-on.html

I havn't tried to sort this myself yet but its on the list of things to do.

Stan/Martin I apologise if Im not suposed to direct people to other forums Thumbs Up

That message should only appear if you insert a fuse into position 37 to prevent the transmission output shaft being driven if the car is towed on all four wheels.

It’s probably just a glitch or battery voltage thing but it could also be a sign that the carbon tracks in the shift motor’s rotary potentiometer are starting to oxidise/corrode (a very common problem as, inevitably, most L322s just stay in high range for years on end so the tracks never get used/cleaned)
