Like anything, it's all fixable. I wouldn't be too concerned about surface rust on the undercarriage so long as it hasn't progressed to the stage of delamination of the metal. You can always spend many happy hours underneath with a dremel or some other device derusting and painting if you're a bit like me! I would, however be looking very closely at the rear wheel arches. Light surface rust on the edges (especially within the back door closure area) is treatable provided it hasn't started to get between the inner and outer arch panels (they're double skinned), also pay particular attention to where the cill joins the wheel arch inside the door closure. Corrosion gets in there and it's hidden by the plastic cill trim. Any bubbling above the plastic trim needs treating with extreme suspicion. As to rust on the tailgate, common, but tailgates can be changed. I've just bought a 2010 (2011 MY) 4.4 TdV8 that has no tailgate rust and only very light surface rust in one or two areas around the rear wheel arch inside the door closure, so they are out there, but it took me a few months of looking to find one. Purely my opinion, but I'd be giving that a wide berth. There is evidence of delamination on the subframe, my car has light surface rust on the subframe, nothing like that! The wheel arches don't look too bad, but I'd want to see them with the door open. Drives:

+1 for giving that one a miss. While some of this is surface rust and shouldn't be a problem, the sub-frame doesnt look too clever to me and there are plenty more out there. Current: FF Westminster money pit

I'm looking at similar age RRs - do I have any chance of finding one without rust issues ? 7 and 8 year old vehicles succumbing to tin worm ? |

We bought ours 18 months ago and the only signs of corrosion were the rear wheel arches and the tailgate, both well known and documented for condition and fettling advice on here. Ours cost £180 to have sorted 2 months ago. There's a good buying guide in the wiki, too, which gives lots of general and specific information.
