I heard of this on a P38 diesel. A farmer friend had one and had to carry around a container of water to throw onto the diesel pump. I watched him do it one day when he turned the ignition off and the engine was still running, he walked calmly as anything around the front, opened the bonnet and poured water on the pump, sure enough the engine stopped.

sounds like diesel runaway - lots of stuff online about it and some interesting videos on youtube.

Some times i have to disconnect the battery earth lead and turn on everything electrical and can still take 2 minutes or so,other times it will just stop itself if everything electrical is on. Mercedes AMG w207

if you disconnect the battery and it continues to run im not sure how it can be an electrical issue? the engine is getting fuel or oil or both after key off allowing it to run. if you have disconnected the battery it can only be from worn components nothing is actively electronically operating? |

The only way to switch a diesel off is by removing the fuel source. When you turn the car off what you are actually doing is isolating the fuel supply. This is why a diesel doesn’t have spark plugs as the diesel ignites when compressed and will just keep running regardless of the battery being disconnected.

if the fuel pump relay is stuck closed so powering the fuel pump even after ignition is off, that is the low pressure end. the injectors are all electronically controlled so how is the low pressure fuel getting into the cylinders after key off with the injectors all closed...? |

Bit late to the party with this but years ago had some thing like this with my first classic, fitted extra earth leads between engine and body and body to battery cured it. |
