Hi all,

Most of my driving since 1980s has been with a manual gearbox. I now have l322 4.2sc 6 speed and while I leave it in D most of the time, I sometimes use the S± manual option, either when going downhill, or on a undulating A roads where the automatic hovers back and forth between 5 and 6 unnecessarily.

Just wondering if there is any clear "best practice" to look after the transmission in terms of driving style - is D preferred? About 80% of time D is where it would put it anyhow...

Will this increase the life of gearbox?
It wont change back and forth unneceserraly.

But keeping it low at downhills will put load on gearbox too... 2010 3.6tdv8 180k km.
