3.6TDV8 Steering Rack Replacement | |
Has anyone changed the steering rack on a 3.6TDV8 ?
I started to change the inner & outer steering track rod ends due to clunking at the steering wheel and what I thought was play at the inner end of the track rods. However, I found as soon as the rack boot was off one end that the play was not in the inner ball joint, but between the rack and the housing.
I could move the rack up by more than 2mm, so assume the support bush in the rack housing is badly worn.
I'll see tomorrow if I can adjust the clearance down via the alleged adjuster nut on the rack - but don't hold out much hope of taking all the clearance out, based on comments elsewhere.
Assuming adjustment isn't going to be enough, next stage will be a rack change.
I've already searched extensively for info on how to replace the rack, but the only info out in the ether is that the LR workshop manual process is very longwinded / painful & that it's believed possibly easier methods exist - but they're not described other than to say the track rods are removed to make it easier to extract the rack.
There's minimal space for access, so has anyone any advice after doing it themselves ? Paul,
