United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Santorini Black
BMW - Made in Germany

Hello

Was having a rummage around in the 2011 this afternoon. Behind the cover on the right hand side of the boot is a large black box with the BMW logo on it and a Land Rover sticker. Any ideas what it is? I didn't think the RR still had many, if any BMW components?

Thanks.

Haha, nope. To be honest, I was quite glad to see some German engineering still in the car!!! Can't say I'd be so delighted with a lot of Ford tech....except the TDV8 4.4 of course which is supposedly Ford built/designed?

Worse...........................

It's a JLR developement of the TDv6 which is a Joint Ford/PSA/Citroen job! Built at Dagenham. The TDv6 has at least 3 versions that I know of - the 2.7 version for LR with a single Turbo and lubrication system / air intake system re-designed for LR needs, the 3.0ltr version with sequential turbos (in RRS, D4, XF and Xj) the Twin Turbo 2.7ltr version for Jaguar and PSA group cars (XF, XJ, bigger Pugs and the Citroen C5 and C6 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

Well.... it was more a way of germanize engines like bimmers, mercs, etc.. which share engines across the range....The w12 on the bent continental is nothing more than two vr6's glued together...

The tdv6 and tdv8 were marketed as being very connected in its birth, but in reality the only thing, as a concept, which is shared between them is the bore and stroke. The V angle is different, 90º for the tdv8 60 for the tdv6. Two turbos for the v8, one for the v6, etc... That fact alone makes the engines a world appart.

The Bentley Continental GT is technically a rebodied and more powerful Volkswagen Phaeton. Same chassis, same engine but tweaked to give it more power.
The VW board found a clever way to shift hard to sell VW Phaeton's by rebodying the car as a Bentley and by doing so attracted a new kind of nouveau riche customer not really bothered about Bentley heritage.
