My first RR vogue 3.6 TDV8 2009 - advice please.

Hey so I am collecting the car on Saturday. I have already been to see it and love it. Sorry for the long post!

After a huge amount of research it's looking like I'm going to have a mini heart attack every time the engine management light flashes up on the dash by owning one of these beauties. So I'm thinking one of these plug in diagnostic readers would save on diagnostics and long term health! Any links to a good one please?

Going into buying one of these cars eyes wide open so when am I going to need to change the turbo or gearbox or can I improve the life expenctancy? Any recalls I need to get on top from 2009 onwards? It's a vogue 3.6 tdv8 59 plate. Had a quote from specialist as wanted to know cost of things. To refurb the gear box is £2400+vat. Any ideas on price of bags on suspension? Or the compressor? I know everywhere will differ. I have also been told by LR that this model does not have a seperate chassis so the body does not come off on repairs.

ALL advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm a nervous wreck after reading all the horror stories of these going wrong and the crap extended warranties that mean nothing at all.

I'm in South Wales, UK.

Firstly congratulations !! More informed members will be along shortly. My tuppence worth is unless the car has a definite gearbox issue, then only a gearbox service is required, not heard of many TDV8 gearboxes going bad, that is reserved for the TD6 chocolate one. Definitely do something with the turbos, an EGR delete seems to solve the problem, however again the turbo issue is more prevalent in the sport. As previously said better versed people will be on.

Main thing is enjoy, it's not nearly as bad as you think, you don't hear about all the happy campers with no problems.

Cheers

In answer to the question re diagnostics, there's a number of good options, but personally I would go with the IID tool. Available from Dan @ Duckworths for good money, excellent functionality, great support from GAP, high resale price should you move on, it's an all round winner for me Thumbs Up

+1 for the IIDtool, it’s proven itself time and time again saving me money each time.

It will pay for itself very quickly....... Thumbs Up ______________________________

The icarsoft i930 is a much cheaper option. The IID is better in many, many ways but the i930 is worth a look. I have both. The i930 stays in the car. 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

+1 on the IIDTool - budget for it when purchasing - get the Bluetooth one. (not sure if they still make the non BT one?).

New air comp complete is ~ £500 but a lot of people just repair them. New front struts are reasonable from Island. Back bags rarely go.

And on the gearbox, never replaced one (or had any work done on one - totally reliable in the three we've had and we tow a large caravan frequently). Turbos, don't know, always had petrol ones.

Top tip would be as soon as something breaks, fix it immediately - don;t let hte work mount up, just keep on top of it.

Another top tip would be only fit gen LR parts (or known OEM) even if they are twice or three times the price - that way you only need to do a job once.

Another + for the iid tool , the bt version lives in my car and is controlled by your smart phone via an app. Superb support from Gap. Gearboxes are very strong , so an oil change or flush should be sufficient. Turbos and egrs seem to be the weak point on the 3.6 if either let go it can be catastrophic for the engine. Egrs can be mapped out and be blanked. These engines love a remap and fly after same. Great car with a great engine As with all vehicles, regular oil changes are preferred. Silicone turbo hoses are a great upgrade , cheaper than original and last a lifetime.

All the above are just my humble thoughts Thumbs Up

Enjoy your 3.6 , i loved mine Thumbs Up 2015 4.4 AB
