Common enough failure at that age. Its the rectifier that goes so see if you can get it repaired rather than a whole new part.

Thanks for the replies really appreciate the advice, ideally need a garage to carry out the work as back problem has finished my days of spanner work |

Had the new alternator fitted at my local garage picked it up Friday went to use it yesterday started it up and its leaking coolant badly it looks like it’s spraying from the rad and then onto the fan , would this have been damaged during the work as it was definitely not leaking beforehand |

Definitely down to them. A piece of cardboard can be used to protect the radiator instead removing it.
