Possible Transmission Fault??

Afternoon Folks.
My L322 4.4 M62 Engined V8 with 152k on the clock has started to make a few odd noises/vibrations which makes me think transmission. Converted to LPG at 106k with no problems.

Most common is going round corners, with low power, and there is a juddering - almost as though it were a driveshaft, however there is no (or minimal play) in the front driveshafts or bearings (jacked up by the local garage and pulled and pushed. There is a slight amount of up and down movement in the driveshafts but nothing the garage was worried about.

At cruising speeds, slightly more common when going uphill, but occurs every 5 miles or so, similar juddering - almost like an out of balance propshaft, but sometimes happens with a slight (50/100rpm) increase in revs.

Local Independent Landrover Dealer thinks this is the start of the downward decline of the transmission...

Although possibly not linked, little tiny bits of the front tyres are starting to 'tear' off. They've been fine for 30k, then all of a sudden as they've gone past 2mm, it's as though the rubber is starting to delaminate and little 1-2mm chips are starting to tear off. They've got even wear - and the rears are fine...

Is this a combination of problems? Is ANY play up and down in the front driveshafts at the diff end normal? (local garage believe they are perfectly normal)

Thanks! I'm at the point where chucking £3k at a 54 plate with 152k miles for new tyres and transmission is borderline uneconomic - although I do love driving the big AR Censored ED old girl! 2005 L322 Tonga Green 4.4l BMW Engine with Touchscreen

When the torque converter lock-up clutch on the 5HP24 gets worn it causes a vibration which sounds a bit like driving over a cattle grid. The rev counter needle moves around very slightly in sympathy with the noise. On my L322 I found it was worse at a steady 30mph driving up a gentle incline. Does this fit in with your symptoms, or not really?

Phil

Thanks Phil. It sort of does - it feels exactly like driving over a cattle grid, but there is very little noise associated with it - it’s more feel than sound! Does anyone have a contact for a reliable reconditioner?
Roean in Telford have said they’ve used most local ones in the Midlands due to rebuild quality issues. Sad 2005 L322 Tonga Green 4.4l BMW Engine with Touchscreen

Hmmm. Still doesn’t sound 100% that it is the LUC causing the issue.

If it were, the torque converter is separate from the transmission so you really don’t need a specialist to replace it – any competent mechanic who you trust could do it. There’s no need to open up the transmission. Clearly the transmission has to come out of the vehicle, though, to access it.

Places like JPAT (https://jpat.co.uk/torque-converter-remanfacture.html), Sussex Auto Parts (https://www.sussexautos.co.uk/torque-converters.php) and Mackie Transmissions (https://www.mackie-transmission.com/engineering) will usually turn around the remanufacture of an F38/A85 converter in two days. Cost is around £250. Removing and re-installing the transmission would require around 5 hours of labour, then you’d need new fluid, filter and a sump gasket. Probably around £800 worth in total, using OE parts (Mobil ATF LT71141 fluid, IBS Filtran filter, etc.)

Do you have access to any diagnostic kit which can record the engine and input speeds, as this is the only sure-fire way of proving whether or not it’s the LUC causing the issue?

Thanks for this Phil. Much appreciated. If I can find it, I’ve got a BLuetooth IBD module which should pick it up from the ECUs .... however it’s not been seen in the garage for a while ... Crying or Very sad I need to find it!
I’ve booked it in for some more thorough diagnostics on Saturday to see if we can track the problem down. 2005 L322 Tonga Green 4.4l BMW Engine with Touchscreen

I am no expert on auto boxes but have been told if you get a feeling like driving over a rough patch of road / cattlegrid it could be the lock up clutch in the torque converter slipping. Before shedding out $$$ try a fluid / filter change and add a dose of DrTranny... https://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/l...-fixx.html 2007 TDV8 VSE

Update!

Thanks for the really helpful comments guys. Over the last week, I’ve been more focussed on listening when and how the rumble happens. I’ve noticed there is a load hum when the judder happens. I’ve dropped it into the local Independent RR place this morning . They are checking it over to make sure there is nothing obvious, but planning to do a tranny fluid power flush today. Hopefully this will give a good indication if it’s the torque converter, even if it’s only a semi temporary fix!

Next on the list are new tyres and a major service! I’ve figured I’d rather spend a couple of £K getting all the little bits of maintenance done and hopefully get another 2-3 years out of it than spend 10 times that on the Tiguan The Boss has go her eye on!! Rolling Eyes

I’ll let you know what it’s like when I pick up! Thumbs Up 2005 L322 Tonga Green 4.4l BMW Engine with Touchscreen

Fingers crossed .... no juddering on the test drive by the garage or me afterwards! A full powerflush with new fluids and additives. Hopefully a £300 cheaper fix! 2005 L322 Tonga Green 4.4l BMW Engine with Touchscreen
