2007 4.2 sc gearbox issue 2-1

Hello, new owner here with a 2007 supercharged Range Rover 4.2 running on lpg, had been sitting for around 2 years before I got hold of it. Covered around 600 miles so far.

Been having a issue of when coming to a stop at lights etc, dropping from 2nd to 1st it takes a while and you got a shove when it selectes 1st, it only dose this in auto cant get it to do this when I’m changing gears manually. I have ordered a new sump filter with gearbox oil so will try changing this.
I’ve spent hours reading the web on the issue and it seems to be a common problem some people have had the gearbox reset or updated and has gone away. Was wondering where the best place to get this done is? I’m south east uk.

Also has gone in to the limp mode where to allows only limited gears 3rd and reverse.

Any help would be grateful thank you.

Software update using an IID tool sorted my gearbox issues and is known to help the 2-1 thump issue.

Had a slight shunt on mine not very often. Just done oil and filter no update done all seems good Thumbs Up done at 70.000m

Firstly,
Welcome to the very select 4.2L Supercharged club Thumbs Up .
I am planning to have a gearbox flush done in the new year so will be interested to see if it helps resolve the 2-1 thump. I know what you mean tho' occasionally mine does that.

It could be attributed to the auto box but sometimes im sure with some cars, as the crown and pinion gears start to wear in the front and rear diffs plus wear and tear in the moving bits a certain amount of "transmission wind up" can occur.
I tried a little experiment, my drive has a slight slope, I parked on it, put selector in Park, no handbrake, turned off engine and slowly released the foot brake. The car did roll forwards about 3".

kezbo 1981 This does sound very interesting where did you get the software from and is it a easy job to do?

Thanks mine is on 78k atm, shall see how I get on with the oil. Just been out for a test run and dose do it in manual if you catch it wrong the car can rev up like it’s in neutral before it selects 1st.

Did look at the IID tool but it’s quite an investment.

Mostly the gearboxes don’t want to select first,generally they will pull off in 2nd only picking 1st if you bang your foot on the gas. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

My 2007 4.2SC has a distinct slight shunt in the transmission, particularly when changing from deceleration to acceleration at very slow speeds. It's not a big clonk, just a slight shunt you can feel. Like above, it also rolls slightly on taking up park. I suspect it's transfer box or diff related due to mileage and heavy city use prior to my ownership.
I can rule out gearbox, as mine had a new box 15k miles ago after it lost drive, and wouldn't select gears.
Currently at 111k, I've had it since 99k.

Changed the oil and the 2-1 knock has gone. The 3rd gear transmission fault was low voltage on the battery so changed that and all is good again. 2007 sc

Mine is on 180k had it for 5 years and done 120k change the oil in my gearbox every 30 to 40 k no problems and mine rolls forward too always has Thumbs Up
