2018 PHEV

Surprised no one has posted this: -

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-car...ed-testing

2 litre 4 cyclinder ingenium petrol engine (the one that's just gone in the F-Type). 295bhp and 295lb ft.

Electric motor. 201bhp and 332lb ft

The petrol engine makes it's maximum torque at 1500 rpm and the electric motor at 0 rpm. It total it's +80lb ft more than the SDV8 and at lower rpm and with a lot more bhp.

My guess is it'll weigh about the same as the SDV8 even with the electric motor and battery pack.

My only issues are: -

1. How lacking in torque will it be when the battery's empty.

2. 4 cyclinder thrum in a luzury car.

3. What will fuel consumption be like on a long trip when you're just using a petrol motor.

4. Why isn't there a 6 cylinder 3 litre petrol with 500 bhp + the 200 bhp electric motor for something more bonkers?

Norway

I think that this PHEV will be a very valuable addition to the current engine options.
In Norway such PHEV cars - with >= 50km pure electric range - are taxed much much lower than diesel and petrol cars. Due to that, I expect that this PHEV model will be very popular! The current sales of Cayenne S E-Hybrid, X5 XDrive40e, XC90 T8 is very high here locally due to the mild taxation for these cars.

I'm looking forward to this L405 PHEV 2018 model!

Anyone here got the V6 Hybrid? That's been out for a while, what's it like?

. Cheers, Greg

Surprisingly, very few of them were sold and it was very quietly dropped from production only very recently.

Germany

We had an early Cayenne Hybrid for about a year. The battery lasted for only 2-3 km in full electric mode. Fuel consumption was around 8 l in the city which was good. However on the autobahn the car was very thirsty with more than 19 l/100 km. Thus a diesel seems the better choice for long-term driving. The newer hybrids like the X5 and perhapsthe new Rangie seem to have better electric range, but the problem of long-term travel with an empty battery and the additonal weight for the batteries lasts. In Norway I would also buy the hybrid as they are so much cheaper there than in germany and you have strict speed limits over there.

I have preordered a 2018 FFR with V8 petrol engine and hope to be able to enjoy this engine als long as such cars are still available. Yet I have no confirmation if the V8 will last in the 2018 model as new 6-cylinder Ingenium engines are rumored to come. As JLR have announced a new XJ with the V8 a few days ago it seems unlikeyl that they will skip the V8 in the FFR now, at least for the SV dynamic which came on sale onyl a few months ago.

I came within a whisker of buying one earlier this year. Very civilised but pure electric range limited to less than one mile. Hugely expensive for what it is. Good MPG, I averaged over 50. Limited production, requires specially trained mechanics to work on it. Overall one to avoid IMHO

When I asked after a new one at my dealer's, he instantly pointed me in the direction of a conventional Diesel!

I've just checked the LR used car site and out of the 350 used <3 year old FF's available (the period of time that the hybrid has been available), there are only 9 hybrids currently available Shocked Little wonder that it was quietly dropped...

They were a trial and the vast majority were given to LR Managers to begin with, hence the S/H ones available. They were dropped because something new is on the way. The Tesla guys have been at Gaydon for some time now but that's all the info I can glean.

The V6 Hybrid uses an electric motor instead of a torque converter therefore the 3.0 hybrid has more torque than an SDV8 version of the 405... Thumbs Up

Friend of mine has had an SDV6 Hybrid L405 for a couple of years - bought instead of an SDV8 only for Belgian tax reasons. Does a lot of miles in it and I don't think he's had any major issues.

SDV6 Hybrid has less torque than the SDV8 - 700 Nm vs 740 Nm.

No.

The most recent figures I can find (in comparable standard-wheelbase, Autobiography trim) list the Hybrid at 2453 kg and the SDV8 at 2456 kg, so 275 Nm/tonne for the Hybrid vs 301 Nm/tonne for the SDV8.

Norway

The positive things with the new 2018 PHEV model are:

    - Much lower taxation in some countries (Norway, Belgia?, ..) - this is at least most important for me
    - Ability to drive pure electric 50 km, and as such allowed to enter an increasingly number of city centres that only will allow zero emission vehicles into the centres
    - Regeneration of breaking energy and charging during downhill
    - Lots of torque from low rpm

One thing that would have been perfect, was if one could have used the li-ion batteries as emergency power source if/when the 12V battery were flat - I assuume that the 405 isn't any better than the L322 when it comes to power consumption....
