Off road comfort....

Can anyone tell me why the ride is so awful when in lift/off road hight?
.I understand the airbags will be inflated more and could cause a bit more of a bumpy ride etc. But should it not be as soft off road as it is on road?

It's a bone shaking ride off road, my L322 felt a little softer when operating on the rough stuff ..

Any thoughts and advise would be great Thumbs Up

I noticed the opposite with my 405. In off road height the suspension feels noticeably softer and more compliant.

What dia rims and what tyre pressures are you using?

if its like that in GGS try it in M&Ruts. it opens crosslink valves for the suspension across axles in M&R Cheers

In the higher mode it should be softer, with more articulation, there must be something wrong with yours, maybe diagnostic check as starting point, if that inconclusive, then journey with technician from dealer over ground that causes the problem you describe. Consider change to 20" wheels if on larger at present, but what you describe does not sound like wheels issue only.

Have just noticed you have an SVA. They have different suspension and maybe don't suit 20" wheels either. But still, the higher setting ought to be softer. It might be a software issue and an update might be the answer. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I don't take the Westie near any mud. But I noticed this on our P38. In off-road height, it's much much firmer. Which to make makes sense.

More pressure in the airbag=less give, therefore less comfort?

So to me, normal. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior

But the speed will be significantly lower at higher heights so impacts should be less. Cheers

I think someone needs to have a look (Tech) and check the suspension is doing what it should. It doesn't sound right to me as both my D3/4 and FF all seemed softer on raised suspension. Try the M&R to see if it does what it should. Thumbs Up

Move air but not more pressure unless more weight is added at the same time.
The shape of the air-springs changes as they extend and IIRC the L322 air-springs were promoted at the L322 release to be shaped to provide a softer ride at off-road height. However with extreme articulation wheel down-travel becomes limited more readily which makes the ride harsh.

Would the added weight of the 322 versus the 405 not create a more dampened effect on the rough stuff??

Thank you all for your responses.

I am running 275 60 20 cooper winter discoverers. I have tried mud and ruts and it seems no different?

What I may do is for my other 20" wheels with summer tyres and see what it's like. Maybe my tyres being so well reinforced for off road use are actually the problem Question

Does your car still have the original front struts? Lots were replaced under warranty and others later replaced at the owner's cost due to oil leaking from the dampers into the air-spring which restricts suspension movement. Sometimes when lowering to access height the oil in the air-spring prevents lowering which triggers extended mode because the suspension module thinks that the vehicle is resting on an obstacle.

My now-removed LT275/55R20 BFG KO2 provided a harsher ride on my L322 than my new passenger-rated Pirelli AT+ in the same size but not to the extent that I thought something had been wrong with the suspension when the BFGs were fitted.
