Taking the RR up to Scotland to complete the NC500 (and some isles) in May.

Has anyone done the route or parts of it in a RR and have anything to recommend?

There has been at least one thread on this before, so probably worth doing a search.

I've done all of it several times, but never as a set tour. Good weather makes a huge difference as without the views some of the single track roads can be a bit of a chore. Given the right conditions there are some lovely stretches though.

It's very popular and accommodation can be in short supply, as also on Skye in particular which has become rather too busy. So check that you can stay where you want to. If you want a view on particular hotels I might be able to comment, but won't attempt a list as I've stayed in lots. Likewise if you have particular things that interest you on the route.

Some sections (e.g. Applecross circuit, Lochinver to Kylesku via Drumbeg are pretty narrow/windy/hilly and take longer to drive than the distance would suggest.

Fuel is more plentiful than it used to be, due to the popularity of the route, but it is still worth planning where you will get some. If you want super diesel you'll get it in Inverness, Ullapool, Thurso anyway. Some of the smaller/more remote stations can run out if e.g. confronted with a large car club, so don't push your luck with range.

If you need a franchise dealer the only one on the route is in Inverness, with another nearby in Elgin, just southeast of Inverness. Some locations are quite remote so it may take a while to get recovery to you should you need that.

The A9 between Perth and Inverness has average speed cameras on almost all the single carriageway sections and there are lots of roadworks in connection with the dualling of the road. A more entertaining but longer alternative route would be via Glenshee, Braemar, the Lecht (Cock Bridge to Tomintoul) and Nairn. Only Range Rovers since 1988

on a recent episode of the grand tour the chaps were going to do this drive but they diverted inland...sorry i dont know which route they took but it was a brilliant driving road apparently..

I've done it and it was pretty good although it would have been better if the weather had been better. I think towing is out for bits of it. Geoff
