Steering wobble and knocking noise on motorway

Hi folks,

Been reading through alot of the threads on the forum about bushes going bad and issue with the steering rack valve at certain speed.

My issue is slightly different. On the motorway occasionally when I lift the foot of the gas the steering wobbles accompanied by what I could explain is a bad bush/joint knock in rhythm with the wobble.

As soon as speed up again its fine. I have replaced both the control arms on the front passenger side as well as the balint not long ago so surely it cant be them. Also noticed that on right turn into my drive way I hear squeek. This is also intermittent. Sounds suspension related but not sure what or where.

Could it be the tie rod end? If it is how do I know if the inner tie rod end also needs replacing? Could it be the stabliser bar/drop link? Or is it time to change the control arms on the driver side too (noise seems to be more on the passenger side)

I will look under it when its dry, juat wanted some advice in case someone else also experienced the same issue. Current:

Cheers.. will check that too.. however symptom wise.. binding break would cause wobble yeah but not the noise Current:

Check for play in the front cv joints.

Also check the state of the front lower arms which you just had changed. If they were torqued with the car in the air, it can cause the inner bush to fail early.

But as it does it under load, I would start with the bits between the gearbox and the wheels, and work back from there. Not heard of any front diff failures on later cars, but once I’d been through the driveshafts and CVs that’s where I’d be looking. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks mate.

Torque was always at the back of my mind when i replaced the control arms. Although i definitely didnt do it in air, i wasn't 100% satisfied under load so it could be it...

Whats the best way of checking CV joints? Crack in the rubber no grease or is there something else?

I didnt think it would be diff related although I know the front diff oil seal needs replacing as its seeping oil but its not related to this issue. I would vry if its CV joint or drive shaft related as I hear its a pain to get them out. Current:

Basically there should be some sliding movement in the cv but no other movement. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Ok guys, just thought I'd update.

Spent some time today to diagnose the squeeky noise and wobble on motorway.

Troubleshooted each ball joint by injecting silicone grease. The squeeky noise went away. I then undone the lower ball joint and the play was unreal which is bizarre as the usual checking did not show any movement at all.

So to fix, i am going to change both the control arms and the lower ball joint. (Need a dry day with mild temperature as the lower ball joint does really test your patience)

I done the passenger side in summer last year so hopefully shouldnt take as long as it took the first time. Current:

Just a wee update.. took advantage of the nice weather yesterday and stripped the driver side to replace both control arms and the ball joints.

The upper control arm (ball joint end) was badly worn which I believe was the cause of the wobble at high speeds. The lower ball joint was ok but I replaced it anyway. The lower control arm bush was jelly too (compared to the new one)

So all in all completed the job in 3 hours much quicker than the last time.. pure chuffed with it.. Current:
