I have been getting a pump noise occassionaly when turning hard into right turns with lots of lock and the weight of the car mainly on the front passenger side and figured it needed topping up but when a dealer had a quick look he said the fluid levels were fine. He said i probally need a new steering rack but said they go on for a while and it will slowly get stiffer etc - I was worried but he said they dont just fail where you cant steer. Apart from the occassional niose i cant notice any deteriation but will get it looked at when next in for a service or to get a couple of other niggles sorted etc. My car is 4 years old but runs on 20s which may well shorten the life although i havent noticed any abnormal tyre wear? To get the job done i will use a local LR specialist but still have no idea how much it will cost in terms of parts and how much labour is involved etc assuming that is the problem. Anyone else had a rack problem and any ideas out there regarding cost to sort? |

A frend of mine with an 02 TD6 Vogue had to pay £1k for his steering rack to be replaced, seems it was a common issue on the earlier cars.

could it be the track rod ends the thing on the ends of your rack that atatch to the hubs, id change these first along with the power steering fluid shouldnt cost more than bout £100-£200 + having the tracking re checked hope this helps onto no6 Range Rover

Speedymark - Would this account for the noise as if low on fluid? |

i wouldnt have thaught so but thinking bout it i wonder if you might be sucking in air into the pump could it be a perforrated reservour or a loose pipe from the reservour to the pump i doubt you would see a leak as the fluid is sucked from the reservour it wont escape but its bringing air into the system if it was a leak after the pump you would see a leak as its positive pressure i.e the fluid WILL be forced out. if it was me i would change the power steering fluid , check all the hose connections before and after the pump for leaks and tightness then put 2 new track rod ends on as youll have to replace these anyway with a new rack so its not extra cost then get the allignments rechecked onto no6 Range Rover
