Starter motor on its way out....sorted

Got the dreaded clicking and not much else this morning. Tried again after a few seconds and she fired right up.

This has happened twice this week now.

Reading others' woes on here, I best start saving up Big Cry Current: FF Westminster money pit

Turns out it's neither - it's LR032541.

LR want £553 plus £270 for fitting, inc. £200 back for exchange.......

Non OEM (Denso) come in at a much more reasonable £234. Current: FF Westminster money pit

Can you not get the solenoid as a separate part like the 4.2 SC?

When my one went I just replaced the solenoid, and when I took it apart it turned out the contacts inside (plunger and two fixed contacts) were very badly pitted and oxidised but would probably have given furhter service after a decent clean with a scotchbrite pad. The contacts etc are available as separate parts too so you could just buy new contacts. I seem to remember I'd have been about £10 for the plunger and about the same for the contact set. 2006 MY FFRR 4.2 S/C autobiography (Auckland Blue - 901)

I'm told you can't get the solenoid separately so it's the full starter motor unfortunately. Current: FF Westminster money pit

Eurocarparts had a good price when I replaced mine on my last car......I think it was around £240.

It was a Denso unit, exactly the same as the LR replacement.

Best fitted price is £492 from an Indy but Ive found the Denso on Opie Oils for £216 delivered which includes 10% discount and my Indy will charge £162 for fitting. Not unhappy with £372 all in. Current: FF Westminster money pit

I used to have an auto electrician local to me who specialised in rebuilding starters and alternators.

Saved me a fortune when the alternator failed on my 5 series.

Sadly he retired a couple of years back.

^^ I wondered about having it refurbed as LR want your old one back to refurb themselves. My Indy said that if I wanted them to fit a genuine one it would be a LR refurb one ! Current: FF Westminster money pit
