Hi everyone,

The rear glass on my '09 L322 just slams shut when I close it. The gas struts seem to work fine when opening and they hold the glass open without any issues. It's just when I go to close the glass it seems that the struts just let the pressure out rapidly.

Is this normal or should I replace the struts?

The tailgate also seems to open rather quickly. I thought that the springs in the hinges were supposed to let the gate open gently. Maybe those need to be replace too.

Yes mine does that. I find I have to pull it down then hold the weight until its a few inches away then let it go. Saves it smashing down, I wince every time my other half closes it 1995 4.6 v8, green/tan (long gone)

That’s how it’s supposed to be.... though yes, a bit bangy when you close the top tailgate.

The later cars had a little gas strut on the lower tailgate to stop it crashing down. It can be retrofitted to earlier models.

Hi mjdronfield,

I was wondering about that. I did some poking around and it seems that the addition of the gas strut started with the 2010 model.

Do you know of any directions on how to fit this to my '09? I would guess that adding the top mount would be pretty easy. But, it's how to secure it to the tailgate that would be a bit more fiddly. You can't just use some sheet metal screws. I doubt they would be strong enough for that much stress on it. I'm guessing that the tailgates that have these have some type of backing plate with threaded holes to attach the strut.

You can just buy the kit from Land Rover. It doesn’t take any weight, the straps do that. I remember a good few threads on it from a few years ago.

Let me see if I can find them.....
