Smoky startup in cold weather - TD6

So it's winter again and as per every winter, my TD6 chuffs a cloud of smoke on startup.

Basically when the ambient temp is below 10 degrees and you start it up for the first time of the day, there is a cloud of blue/black smoke fired out of the exhaust, and the idle is lumpy for the first second or 2.

Problem gets worse the colder it is. Eg. yesterday was 3 degrees and started it up for the first time in a couple of days and a cloud of smog drifted down the lane. Smells of sooty, of poorly burnt diesel.

Only a problem during the winter months, when the ambient is over 10 degrees the problem goes away.

Guessing glow plug related? 2004 TD6 with 145k on the clock, and no history of glow plugs being changed.

I'm reticent to try changing them having read the horror stories of trying to get them out though! 2004 Vogue TD6 - Remapped Smile
