Moving abroad soon and looking at returning back to UK for about 2 or 3 months each Summer.

Really don't want to part with my car..........................so

Has anyone successfully mothballed their car for 6 months with no problems ?

Any tips?

Would be better off stored inside and being driven about once a week, just my humble opinion. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

Your brake discs will corrode quite badly over 9 months without use, you would be better taking them off and replacing as required. I would disconnect the battery if possible after fully charging or leave a Ctek connected. Can't really think of any other potential problems.

I would think it would suffer irreparable damage leaving it outside for 9 months at a time!

Have you checked what it would cost to have it stored by one of these "Car Storage Companies"???

I would imagine it would cost less than the damage would sir

^ I leave my car outside for 12 months at a time and only occasionally use it. Doesn't seem to harm it.

Don't be tempted to put a cheap car cover on it whatever you do or it will destroy the paint.

I can understand why you don't want to sell though as it is a very unique car.

I'd be looking into one of these indoor storage places if I were you.

As yours is petrol, be careful.

Speaking from bitter and costly experience, modern unleaded is evil stuff if it’s left to sit for long periods. If your can’t run the car regularly, drain the fuel completely before laying up.

Indoor storage is at least a couple of grand a year. Lot of money to spend on a £5K ? car and then maybe still have issues when I return.

Exactly, Plus I've spent a small fortune on it last 4 years.

I used to leave my Mazda out from November to April 4 years on the run. Took battery out when I left it, charged it on return and after a while, coughing and spluttering no problem. I would put one of those Halfords breathable covers over her but with a cheap Ebay cover on top - then ask around (you must know someone) for somebody to come and fire her up once a month and drive her backwards and forwards a few times - gotta be worth asking?

I wouldn't bother with a cover. I bought a 'breathable, tailored' one for my beetle and it kept blowing off and a cheap halfords one for my Sierra cosworth which ruined the paint as it got damp underneath and caused loads of pitting.

All you can realistically do is try it for six months and see how you get on. I'd disconnect the battery, leave hardly and fuel in it and use a proper hard wax on the paint. Also put some of those damp pads inside to trap any moisture.

You'll probably have to service it more often also and beware of the tyres cracking

Rodents moving in may also be a problem depending on where you live.

Regarding the petrol, you really want to leave as much fuel in it as possible to minimise the air in the tank. It's the moisture in the air that combines with the ethanol in the petrol that causes it to go off.
You can buy additives for the petrol to keep it in good condition, I used to use them with my petrol lawn mower, never had any problems year on year.
Also if possible leave the hand brake off and let the car sit with the park pin holding it. I never use the handbrake when my car is parked up.
It also would be worth spraying the underside of the car with a thin oil to minimise corrosion, living next to the sea I do this regularly and my car has no corrosion at all underneath so it does work.
