M62 Engine'd L322

Evening chaps, I've been Green Oval Free now for 8 months now but the desire for heat ache and pain is growing stronger.

Now this is to accompany the M5 and needs to be good value so my traditional go to fix for this is a P38 but have you seen the cost of something you might actually take a chance on owning these days!?

Which brings me to the cheap L322, is there such a thing? Well I've found something that is cheap enough and actually not that bad to look at. Its a bit scruffy but no rust to speak of anywhere apart from a little underneath the lower tailgate. Its got better arches than my 07 S/C had.

It starts nicely after being stood for a couple of weeks, aux belt is a little squeaky until things have warmed up and most things seem to work as far as I can tell however there are two issues:

One is Airsusp inactive on the dash, I tried turning lock to lock but it hasn't gone. The owner tells me it comes on occasionally but when reset it stays off for a length of time. I can't work out how they are resetting, owners partner normally dealt with it and they weren't available. No other warnings or errors on the dash etc, however the car had previously been stood for some months and required a jump start. Is this likely to be the reason? Is there a cheap reset tool for an L322? I had no issues on my 07.

Second is an oil leak, it has a receipt for all the rocker cover gaskets which are pretty common on the M62. Oil is leaking, fairly badly in my opinion, and is reaching the ground from the area immediately behind the front bumper but its dripping through the undertrays etc. Its not horrific but after being stood for 2 weeks there is some visible oil on the ground.

Does anyone have a list and the approximate repair costs of other common oil leaks on an M62. 2005 E60 M5

Oil leak directly behind the bumper if on the passenger side and I would be looking at the remote oil filter housing.

You have vanos solenoid seals which are probably an hour or two as quite fiddly and upper timing chain covers which are much more involved which I would guess at 5 hours maybe but somebody doing them every day would probably do them quicker.
If you look at the vanos procedure you can see what is involved with both.

http://www.beisansystems.com/procedures/m62tu_vanos_procedure.htm

You don’t need to remove much to do the solenoid seals but you can see them in the procedure and you should be able to see if they are leaking.

In terms of suspension reset tools, I'd recommend just getting an IID tool, it'll do this job fine, but you'll likely need it at some point down the line anyway. Ptaroni has one for sale on this website for a good price. If that's too pricey for now, you can buy a EAS fault kicker off eBay for £70-80, just plug it into the OBD and it clears all those faults automatically in a second or two. I've got one you can have for £50 If you want it, been used twice before I got the IID. Obviously if there's an underlying issue, it's going to keep coming back

yes i've had leaking vanos solenoid seals on an n43 and a m54 so i assume its a similar sort of problem. nothing sounding too horrific then, to be fair i did view it in the rain and it always looks worse when its got water everywhere. 2005 E60 M5

Have a root around the front of the engine, the upper timing chain covers go hard in a similar way to the cam covers and start to leak.

Get yourself the icarsoft LR v1.0 for about £100, it will reset all air suspension fault codes plus be able to diagnose all manner of other faults from gearbox to engine to airbag etc 2004 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 v8 LPG, Java Black, 22' Hawke Alloys, Black Beast

Thanks, well aware of an IID tool and have used one on an acquaintances SC. It was one of those things I intended to buy for mine but never actually needed it. I was rather hoping the circa £100 ish icarsoft jobs would have sufficed for resetting air suspension and basic fault code reading etc and it seems they can so I think I'll try one of those as middle ground between a kicker style tool and a full blow IID. To be honest I'm not sure I did the lock to lock procedure correctly. Could someone tell me exactly how that is supposed to be done? 2005 E60 M5

In all honesty, lock to lock almost entirely covers it. Go to full lock in one direction, hold for a couple of seconds and then the same on the opposite lock. It may clear some soft faults, but not a hard fault

i must get one, i am always getting asked to look at people's range rovers but my allcomms only does up to 2005 and my faultmate is locked to my vin unless i pay £100 ish to swap it over and back again.
Thumbs Up

is is not that sensitive, mine normally clears straight away but with the engine running you just turn the steering all the way to to the left until it stops, all the way to the right and then back to the middle but mine normally clears as soon as i get to one side fully and start turning back.

Cheers chaps, it has dawned on me that there may be some user error here. Again my inexperience with early ones here my be a factor.

Within the middle of the rotary switch to control height there is a button with an LED, i believe that is the automatic height change inhibit switch? If that is illuminated/pressed does that display the "air susp inactive" message?

(Please don't judge... My previous L322 had terrain response so its quite different and the other's I've driven have been 4.4tdv8's which are all different again!) 2005 E60 M5
