4.4 v8 noisey start when hot

Hi all,

weird one this- when you strat our 4.4 v8 (03) first thing its quiet as you like sounds great. When used and left for say an hour or so come back and fire it up it rattles madly for about 5 seconds (tappet noise), then goes back to being silent. Recently serviced so oil is fresh- its annoying more than anything and cant be doing the top end much good! any suggestions?

sound like the oil isn't getting to the tappets on a hot start , could be low oil pressure from the pump..did this start after the oil service? ... - .- -.

thanks for the reply scarey- yes my inital thoughts were low pressure but light goes out almost instantly. It may well be worth me checking the pump i guess- anyone any ideas on where its located in the m62? It was doing this prior to the oil change also.

What oil did you put in there on the last oil change? If you took it to a garage they may have put an incorrect grade in, if it was too thin then it tends to drain out of the top end too quickly (when hot) and too thick it doesn't get to the top end quick enough (when cold) so as Goldilocks said: "mmm, correct grade of oil; nom nom nom"

The other thing is that your oil filter is clogged and not allowing the pressure to build fast enough - when an M62 gets to 100K it's time to increase the frequency of the oil changes due to the extra carbon contamination etc etc.

You need to connect a pressure gauge to determine exactly what the oil pressure is doing. Any good garage should be able to connect one up and take readings.

The oil pump is in the sump, possible cause of low oil pressure (apart from the obvious lack of oil) will most likely be worn main bearings

Was it doing it prior to the service? Our oil filters can sometimes break up into bits.

Terribly sorry old chap. I think I must have been replying as other replies came through and I wasn't paying full attention.
