First time Restricted Power Mode - Caravan Attached

Ok, first time I hook up my caravan, 2 miles into journey, restricted power mode kicks in

Stop and restart clears problem. On one ocassion had to leave standing for 5 mins before as to turn engine over but fault cleared.

Initial checks....battery is only showing 12.3 volts - checked this morning and it’s actually only 12.11 volts which according to charts is 55% charged. Engine running 14.6v so alternator running ok.

Could the reduced battery capacity be the reason for the power reduction? Hooking up the caravan means more load on the electrics to power lights, battery and fridge.

Since then, restricted power once when solo.

Sounds too intermittent to be anything mechanical. No black smoke or anything like that

Car is a 2011 Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Any advice welcomed

Regards
Mark

Edited again 22/8/18 update on voltage before morning startup

Would be checking the small top plenum to manifold hoses first. Sounds like a boost related issue. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I agree with NMJ.
Look out for tell tale black soot on or near the hoses and plenum.

Thanks guys.

I’ll check this out tomorrow. Not sure why this would give the intermittent fault but willing to look at this as a point to check. Car is already booked into the workshop for next week but won’t hurt me checking the obvious first.

Hopefully this is a one off....I bought the car to tow my caravan as my previous car - Toyota Landcruiser - was a little light but reliable during my ownership.....I’m only into 1500miles with the RR!

Hopefully a hose leak but have a look at my recent thread.

As above mine went and we replaced all four as mine had the original hoses and the replacement design is far more robust!

Pics of what mine looked like when they went and the replacement style. Mine was split beneath the jubilee clip once you removed it was blindingly obvious where it had perished.

Looks like an easy (!!) check. Tomorrow looks like it’s going to be interesting if I can get the caravan home first!!! Wish me luck.....

Removed the top plastic cover and everything is bone dry and no evidence of any splits or leaks/soot

I’m still experiencing the fault when running solo so I have to say i don’t think it’s not Caravan related. Seems to be when I try to increase the power demand.

Like I mentioned in my original edited thread, the cold voltage this morning was only 12.15v which I think is about 50% of full capacity so battery might be the suspect.

If the system is seeing such a drop could that be triggering the restricted performance mode?

Hopefully the fault codes will point something out when it goes back to the dealer next week

I’ll keep you abreast of any developments

Regards
Mark

The plastic manifolds can also crack that will normally be where the plastic is bonded together. Soapy water mix and the engine running might show this up should bubble if there is leak.

A spray bottle with soapy water in and give it a good spray with the cover off. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography

Under the cover everything looks brand new. I couldn’t see any splits but didn’t try the soapy water test. Fault has cleared again so it off to the supplying dealer this week. I’ll update the thread if the fault is diagnosed.

Do you know what code is thrown up by the plenum/rubber leaks?

A good rev I can understand it bubbling only whilst the turbo(s) are boosting though, at idle there wouldn't be any pressure there at all IMHO. BMW i3 Electric Car
