I have never been a fan of joining the “personal plates club”, but I have seen an interesting plate for sale and am wondering whether to join.
How easy is the changeover procedure?
What order do you do things, like MOT, insurance, new plates etc.

Any tips welcome,

It’s v simple .. register the change with the DVLA and pay the fee
They’ll send V5 , letter for getting plates made up , and take care of linking the new reg to the chassis # for the MOT .
No need to get a new cert
Then just call insurance to notify of the new reg 4.2 SC - sold , now bought back

If it’s on the dVla site, worth checking out too, you should get a certificate of entitlement with a code on when you buy the plate.

You can then do it all online via the Government website. You put in your current V5 doc number, and the certificate number then you can put the plates on.

The plates can be made up off the certificate of entitlement. You don’t need to change the MOT very that happens automatically within the DVLA and you don’t get a new one. Tax is automatically changed too.

You really only need to notify your insurance in the whole process.  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Possibly, but only if they are t**ts.

I think they charged me on my M3as that is a small rob dog company (cheap but service), but most of the online based ones have the facility to do it on their webpages. The Ffrr has a plate on and that was done on Axa/swift cover for free. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

But what about changing it back again? I mean transferring the personal plate to a brand new car and leaving the affected car with a valid plate? Or the same/original age plate?

The plate your car is issued with stays with the vehicle.

When you take a Reg plate off, you put it on retention which costs £80 I think. You can then put it on a different car, and the original dated plate goes back on the car, unless you want to put a different dateless plate on the car... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Yes £80 fee, the original number went back on my p38 even after 9 years, one other thing I found is you often see the same number for sale on different sites best to see if its on dvla site because there fee is all in where some others charge transfer fee on top.

Whether they are t**ts not is more dependent upon who works there, the charge for changing details depends upon the T&Cs.
