We have to get equipment from the states for work projects and it's always a flog with their customs (try £4k for 2 Plasma/LCD Brackets to Brussels and this was only to airport!! although the brackets were BIG).

It's nowt to do with the size of the package - it's because it is a hazardous substance (Cl 3.2) you are sending through the system and they have to use a special plane/boat/train with no passengers on it in both USA and UK to transport it. BTW if what you gave your friend was something flammable to carry on the plane he could have been sent to prison in the USA. Friend of mine tried to get a sailboat's liferaft and flares in the back his Granada Estate on the ferry from the UK to Sweden. The back of the car was sitting so low that crew loading the ferry asked him to open the back of the car so they could see what he had in there and when they found the liferaft and flares he had to rebook the car onto a freight only ferry at hugely more cost and got there 3 days after the crew, he was very lucky not to have been prosecuted by the ferry company as most airline and ferry companies have very onerous terms in their ticketing conditions regarding carrying hazardous materials in your baggage in compliance with international regulations covering the carriage of dangerous goods on passenger carrying craft 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes |
