Low Coolant Message but no coolant escaping

Error message came up saying low coolant, then I get the smell of radiator juice and then the hissing and steam from the bonnet.
I get home and inspect the hoses I cant see anything obvious except steam from the interior and hissing on the top of the engine where the thermostat housing is but no leakage, I get a small pool on the ground but from small drips, the temperature gauge is reading normal.
The fan comes on almost immediately when starting from cool so makes me think I have a dodgy sensor in the expansion bottle.
worst case scenario the head gasket has gone, has anyone come across this same problem.
L322 4.2 Supercharged fitted with LPG 2005.
I thank you all in anticipation.

Where abouts is the pool in relation to potential suspect coolant components?
