Fuel Consumption 5.0L SC

Just for a bit of fun I decided to see what fuel consumption I could get out of my car. Today an ideal opportunity came up 120 mile round trip 80% on motorway - I got 27mpg according to the cars computer. As I say it was only a bit of fun as I couldn't really care less but I had the time so I did around 60mph on the motorway +/- 10mph (pretty slow).

Forgive me if I call my expensive, executive mode of transport a car rather than a "truck" Shocked Geoff

Petrol is the way to go, look at the poor chaps with this PHEV nonsense, with a petrol, MPG is irrelevant, we don't have to worry about it as we are happily in denial....... Bow down

My next one will be an SC as I have noticed NO difference in towing MPG but a much better experience. just my opinion you understand Thumbs Up

Hmm. When towing off road and with Goodyear Duratrac tyres recently I saw 4mpg on the 'instant fuel consumption' display when going up a steepish and uneven track (but high ratio and not very heavy trailer). On the old TDV8 322 with a much heavier trailer I never got below 6 mpg. Over the summer, on Pirelli Verdes, and mainly country roads, I averaged 25 mpg (per the screen, probably worse really as speedo overreads, but better than I had feared.

It's probably psychologically unhelpful to have the instant mpg figure displayed - I normally leave it on tank range... Only Range Rovers since 1988

The same - I average 23mpg on a journey right across London and then motorways down to Dorset at 68-70mph.

If I didn't have the 1 hour cross town bit first, and was just motorway, I think 25-27mpg would be fairly easy at similar speeds. It is hard to resist using the power occasionally though, just to give the supercharger a good spin.

That's how I justify the 5.0 S/C anyway...

You lot must drive like angels ! For completely non-mpg related reasons I'm most often pretty laid back and gentle - although pushing the limit more on the motorway - but typically manage just 21 or so on longer runs and 19 or so on a typical mixed week and only around 17 when towing. The only time it seems to vary is just after I fill at my local garage when I get a long downhill run through the next village giving me a schoolboy grin after resetting the trip and seeing 99.9 avg mpg for the first minute. Very short lived as its usually back down below twenty avg by time I've climbed the next hill to get back home... Mike - MPx

CS, I am talking Old Skool i.e Tight... TD6 vs 4.4 BMW lump. On a regular 360 mile journey to Gloucestershire with 2 x 17HH horses I get c. 12/13 MPG with both. I am sure the newer diesels would beat the newer petrols but I am loathe to put money into an RR that gets treated like an extension of the stables. Thumbs Up

That's probably right, though I've never had a TD6 to compare. I'd say a good and not rusty TDV8 (if that exists) would make a great car for towing horses, and prices seem quite reasonable now.

Incidentally I try to use Shell V Power whenever possible, my experience has been the extra mpg makes up for the extra cost and the better performance is then a bonus. Diesel was on Shell V Power diesel. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I haven't yet done any long towing journeys, but moving boats around the yard is certainly very easy with the 5.0 S/C.

MPx - I do enjoy the odd bit of gusto with the engine, but certainly at a steady ~70mph the consumption seems pretty reasonable. I find myself driving this one slower than the Defender 110 it replaced for some reason!

My mpg changes massively as soon as I hit traffic though - a bad journey across London before the motorways can mean I only average ~20mpg for the same run. When I first bought it, driving back from Luton that night behind my now wife (who had only taken and passed her test the week before, so was happy driving along at 60mph), and I averaged 26 mpg, but there was no traffic and practically motorways and A-roads door to door.

CS - I'll have to try premium petrols again - I did experiment in my first few fill ups, and couldn't see a huge difference myself.

Just for a laugh Laughing I reset one of the mpg readouts as I started going up "The Struggle" towards the Kirkstone Pass, leaving Ambleside, a couple of months ago. Less than 5 mpg. Shocked Recovered to 20 mpg by the time I got home! Smile Previous cars:
