Thermostat and general coolant system conundrum

As mentioned elsewhere here had an overheat and thermostat fault last Friday evening.

Got a new thermostat before reading about the mod ( Censored !)

Question is should I get an electric fan too as that's thrown a fault also -- or is the fat that the thermostat is knackered and reason why the fan didn't come on either -- interestingly I think my viscous might not work either -- surely all three wouldn't fail at the same time..................

Hi Bushy,

The only electric fans are the aircon ones they only help in cooling the engine when the going gets really tough, so not very often.

What makes you think the viscous fan is goosed.. ______________________________

Because when I pulled over with water gushing out of the lid of the expansion bottle I could spin the viscous fan blades -- I would have hoped that it would have been hot enough to have engaged -- though thinking about that a bit more -- where does the viscous get heat from to engage? if it's the rad that would have been cold as the thermostat didn't open................

Hmmmmm it's all a bit which one comes first -- chicken or egg, thermostat or fan Very Happy

........... and here's another thought, why not just cut the stat out completely and leave it out

Standing by to be shouted at for being silly!

I do electrics really, not mechanics Wink

The thermostat may well have opened but as is usually the case with our model of Range Rover the radiator gets blocked at the bottom.

I bought my Range Rover with a suspected head gasket failure as the owner reported coolant gushing out of the expansion tank Whistle upon inspection I found this

So I bought a new radiator and all was ok but then I read about the thermostat mod and did that too and it’s been fine since.

As far as leaving the thermostat out altogether it would take forever to heat up and supply warmth to the car.. ______________________________

Ha imagine what I thought when I saw it gooping out like that Rolling with laughter

Seriously though if you’re working in that area I would be looking at the radiator first... ______________________________

Had the car about 6 weeks, it has already done a couple of 120 mile trips without issue, I would have thought the rad would have shown before Friday, but you could be right, I'll look at it.

Now then, to the fans

I thought I'd read the electric fan cuts in first, followed by the viscous -- in fact I'm sure Joe90 said he'd removed his viscous in favour of just using the electric one.............. or have I got that all cart before horse?

You can remove the vicious fan on a TD6 as the engine runs so cool, and is OK in our (what was) temperate climate, but do not do this on the petrol engine. Also a thermostat is a very sensible thing, and easy to replace on the petrol engine, unlike on the diesel Evil or Very Mad .

Thanks Joe, so, as mines petrol, make sure the viscous fan is working? which operates first, electric or viscous?

The electric fan is for the air con condenser. in warmer weather this will kick in to cool the refrigerant if you have the AC on (you always have the AC on ,don't you?), the side effect being of air being blown across the coolant radiator as well, when in traffic etc.

My vicious fan always went round, so probably never worked as intended...

BTW that isn't a spelling mistake Wink .

When I had my Classic RR, I found the viscous fan was always engaged even on a frosty day, so I removed it and bought a twin electric fan kit from a firm called Kenlowe.
The temp sensor plus pipe entered through the top hose rad spigot. There was a dial in the cabin that went to the fans relay so if you had a temp spike you could manually override the stat. When they cut in it sounded like a jet about to take off Laughing .
I guess the hidden plus was that it freed up some horsepower (no fan to drive) so they claimed.

Hi Bushy,

If the viscous clutch is on the way out you can always replace it - I found this online but there could be cheaper ones around.
