Because when I pulled over with water gushing out of the lid of the expansion bottle I could spin the viscous fan blades -- I would have hoped that it would have been hot enough to have engaged -- though thinking about that a bit more -- where does the viscous get heat from to engage? if it's the rad that would have been cold as the thermostat didn't open................

........... and here's another thought, why not just cut the stat out completely and leave it out

The thermostat may well have opened but as is usually the case with our model of Range Rover the radiator gets blocked at the bottom.

Had the car about 6 weeks, it has already done a couple of 120 mile trips without issue, I would have thought the rad would have shown before Friday, but you could be right, I'll look at it.

You can remove the vicious fan on a TD6 as the engine runs so cool, and is OK in our (what was) temperate climate, but do not do this on the petrol engine. Also a thermostat is a very sensible thing, and easy to replace on the petrol engine, unlike on the diesel .

Thanks Joe, so, as mines petrol, make sure the viscous fan is working? which operates first, electric or viscous? |

The electric fan is for the air con condenser. in warmer weather this will kick in to cool the refrigerant if you have the AC on (you always have the AC on ,don't you?), the side effect being of air being blown across the coolant radiator as well, when in traffic etc.
