Alternator or battery

Hi chaps.
Been having a few problems with the fatty over the past few weeks.
Battery is a Bosch s5 020. Fitted Nov 2014 from ECP. Latest episode;
Last night, put the fatty on the smart charger. Was 13.2v this am, fresh off the charger.
Fired straight up
13.04v at Idle.
14.08v at 2500rpm. (No load)
Drove from Walsall to borth with a short stop in Mach on the way.
At borth, battery was 12.3v. car won't start.
Now back in the trickle charger.
Was 12.64v
Opened the doors to get some bits out. Battery dropped to 12.32v

So. Am I right in thinking it's the battery which is duff as the output from the alternator send to be ok?
Cheers

You should be getting 14+v at idle .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

I would have thought your car would start ok with 12.3 V on the battery. Why not take your car to ECP and ask them to test your battery as it is probably still under warranty.

I would check your earth strap to the engine, and the starter cable while you are at it.

If you have a high resistant joint on either of those that will make a difference when starting.
A poor earth connection will affect battery charging too. Too many toys, not enough time

I had the same problem with a Bosch S5 020 which I fitted in March 15.OK for two and a half years then I started to get slow turn over and warning lights on the dash when starting, over the next few months it got worse to the point of not starting and seemed to be constantly on the Cetk. Alternator working fine,no battery drain. Finally took it off the car and back to ECP with my warranty in pocket,After some discussion and pointing out it will not take a full Censored charge l got it replaced. All is ok now. Very Happy The worst thing about being retired is you miss out on all the bank holidays

I replaced the loom battery to alt to starter when I had a problem but then I replaced the alternator at 10 ears and kept it as a spare and changed all belts as well -- poor starting stopped

evening chaps.
thought I'd update. took the battery to ECP and they did their 'test'. swapped it without any fuss for a new 020 bosch.
this has been on since Tuesday and so far so good.
i've also dropped lucky and bagged a brand new alternator for the fatty for £50 posted. so this will be going on over the weekend. Belts n braces like
thanks for all the input and advice. 2003 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 on Gas

Hi Folks!

Just to share my experience.. I recently upgraded to Exide AGM battery equivalent to 020 battery - (ECP part number 444779110) as my Fatty was taking time to fire up & I would get the HDC Inactive message. I had an alternator failure in Tamworth on Monday and managed to get home to Stafford (about an hours drive) on the battery alone Very Happy

Replaced alternator next day, quick jump start & she still fires up half kick! Thumbs Up Loving the AGM right now..
