Bit of Advice needed

Gentlemen, Our village where we live, The RR brand is alive and kicking, plenty of new 405s, sports and older 322s like mine. Now my dilemma is a neighbour who has just moved into the area who seemed a nice fella, has a bought himself an Evoque, Censored and no only that its a convertible Censored . We have spoke in the past only briefly and acknowledged each other down the local, so what do I do carry on as normal, try to educate him, try to avoid eye contact ? Advice is appreciated TIA 2004 vogue

Unfortunately your Corvette doesn't look like a real convertible, otherwise you could have invited him round to show him what:

  • a real convertible looks like
  • a real Range Rover looks like

I'm going to put my Captain Serious hat on here; I know this thread is all good banter, but I am disappointed in comments I've heard elsewhere about Evoques (Pistonheads is a prime example). You know: "not a proper Range Rover", "hairdresser cars", "made for orange women" etc. etc.
And yet, here's a British built product that's sold really well around the world for seven years (getting towards a million units now) and has provided much needed jobs at the assembly plant (Halewood, I think) and for supplier industries. And bagged a series of awards when launched.

If you don't like it and wouldn't buy one, fine, of course. And there's nothing wrong with banter - I get the "drug dealer" comment all the time about my Fattie. It would just be nice if a British success story sometimes got a bit of credit.
/Captain Serious mode.

I agree, but usually ignore the comments. I'm only posting now because it's raining outside and I'm a bit bored Laughing
I don't get why the evoque is seen as not a proper RR.
It reminds me of the Ronnie sketch

We don't buy things for how others perceive us, so it doesn't really matter. If we all liked the same thing life would be dull.
Our evoque new was ~£50k, so not exactly cheap. It's a prestige, so the same spec as the current autobiography.
The quality is every bit as good as my ffrr.
We bought it because my wife didn't want a ffrr, it's just too big for what she needs, and the freelanders etc didn't have the same level of spec.
We test drove every other car in its class from skoda, audi, BMW, merc, etc. Having driven the evoque nothing compared.
Granted it doesn't drive the same as my ffrr, but for sporty driving it is actually better. It is a harsher ride though (no air suspension).

When we bought ours new they were rebadging so everything has a land rover logo, including changing the home screen on the main screen.
Those on the evoque forum thought it devalued the product, but they are after all, all made by land rover.

Way bacm when the cayenne was announced we ordered one. The porche forums were slating how they were diluting the brand. The same happened when the panamera came out. people don't seem to like change.
No doubt other marque's get the same.

Would I like a 405 ?
Sure, but I just don't want to swallow the depreciation, or pay the level of monthly finance required for a new one.
I could buy a 405 cash if I sold some of my other cars, but that's my choice.
Fair play to those that can either afford or are prepared to accept it, that's their choice.

If we are seen as lesser people because we drive an evoque or 2010 322, so be it.
I used to drive an old passat estate as my daily driver (to mop up all the commuting miles), despite owning a p38, rs4, 993 turbo, and other cars.
My mate used to ask didn't I mind what others thought. My response: I couldn't give a monkeys.

It's the same in everything, from trainers, jeans, sunglasses, mobiles, etc.
People judge others without truly knowing why they made those choices (or what they are worth).

Do I judge those for judging me ?
Nah, life is too short, and I truly couldn't give a monkeys Mr. Green Too many toys, not enough time

I forgot to add, if you haven't tried an evoque off road, do so, you may be surprised. It surprised us just how capable it is.

And if you think your 405 will get you out of everything, it won't. Wink
My mate specd locking diffs on his as they aren't standard (on all models at least), plus a/t tyres.
He was the only car to get out of a shoot car park earlier this year, including other 405s on road rubber, discos, shoguns, etc. Laughing Too many toys, not enough time
