This is a smart idea as long as what ever is put in there can't float about and do damage.

folding axle stands - a nice safety item whenever jacking, handy to store on-board.

But doesn’t it mean that you have to lift and lower all of that extra weight every time that you open and close the tailgate, while the inner skin to the tailgate is there to provide box section strength, which will be compromised by cutting holes in it. It also stops the outer skin of the tailgate getting dented from the inside; van owners often line their vans with plywood to have a similar level of protection.

Maybe you need to have a new deep/thick custom lower tailgate knocked up Too many toys, not enough time
