TD6 Gearbox, not changing Gear

My 2003 TD6 Vogue Autobox will not change into 4th and 5Th.I fitted the recon box from a running breaker as mine letgo and thought easier to buy another gearbox. after driving straight away it tries to change into 4th staggers a second then the trans failure message appears,i have changed the autobox oil and filter also the 4th5th solenoid and still the same . gearbox code says gear monitor 4 fault, the gearbox drives fantastic compared to my old box apart from the upper gears,when pulling away slowly it seams to move off in 2nd gear,can any one please help,was going to try and change the other solenoids tomorrow,many thanks people,Dave. Mercedes AMG w207

cheers Phil makes sense,but the oil was like new and no filings at all in the oil or magnet,which i would have thought would be there if the shaft was broken. Mercedes AMG w207

Did you replace the torque converter, or is it the original?
Is there any chance it could be with the Lock Up Clutch, as that engages between 4th and 5th gears?
Could be that it's causing a gearbox fault?

The Torque Converter looked like its was a week old lol so used the one supplied with the replacement gearbox,the gearbox is so so smooth to my old unit but just wont change,what do you mean by clutch lock up is this a solenoid driven part ? Mercedes AMG w207

Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been away.
I believe the Lock Up Clutch is mechanical within the torque converter, don't know if there are any electronic solenoids in the box itself to activate it.

Have you tried changing gears manually to get 4th and 5th gears? If you put the gear lever into Sport mode then you can push the lever forward and backward to manually change up and down.

That may help to narrow down the problem.

Having read rrphil's posts, I would add that if the shaft has only unwound enough to stop the 4th-5th gear shifts, you wouldn't get any metal bits in the oil. RRPhil is an absolute expert/genius on these boxes, so I would go with his suggestion and look at the 'toilet paper' shaft. Thumbs Up

My gearbox was the same was told it was a shaft inside the box so removed the box and replaced it with the box from an x5
A few modifications and it changes so sweet had to use my own valve body.
Anyway when I stripped the gearbox no broken shaft. it was the valve body that was at fault sent it off to valve bodies uk who fitted sonnax valves so still have my old box for when I need another.
I would remove the valve bodie and get it tested b4 you remove the box
