2005 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Java Black
2006 SC zf gearbox issues

Morning all,

My gearbox appears to have a mind of its own lately, shifting when it wants, on light throttle it can’t seem to sit in one gear so it keeps changing between 2, this subsiquently gives me the transmission fault, limited gears only displayed. If you don’t quite stop at a junction then pull away it delays, engages first gear and gives you a jolt back in your seat as it pulls away?? Sometimes it want change gear until 4.5k and other times it’s good as gold?? Need it sorting as it’s nit right.Once this happens I just turn the ignition on and off and it’s fine again. Seems fine on the motorway and fine if you drive it rather spirited but it just isn’t right. Has anyone had anything similar?? Gearbox has recently had an oil and filter change as I had a few transmission fault messages some time ago.

Help!!

How recently was the oil replaced?

What spec of oil was used?

How many miles on the car?

Were the issues present before the oil change?

Oil changed around 300 miles ago, I’ve has maybe 2 issues in the past where I’ve had the transmission fault messsge but nothing like it is now?
I’d have to check oil speck but it was done at a reputable specialist so I’m not too worried about the incorrect oil being used, the cars find 124k.

It appears to get all gears perfectly if you drive it in sport mode and manually select the gears, I’ve noticed that when stopping in sport mode it doesn’t select first every tine but will if you manually select it? Can anyone second my findings? Or has anybody had anything similar.????

Could be bush leaks. When you run in manual/sport it ups the pressure in the system to make sure it's ready to change gear whenever needed. This therefore covers the loss of pressure from the leaking bushes. Prolonged use of manual or sport means the box runs hotter which is also detrimental long term.

This is what I was told by a couple of ZF specialist.

Bet it needs a new Mechatronic unit.
These gearboxes are notorious for it, must be one of the worst autos made.

This is what I’m thinking, reading articles on the net it appears the mechatronic unit is Censored at best.
It’s odd as it performs faultlessly if I drive it in sports mode manually shifting. I could do with someone else checking if there car down shifts to 1st gear in sports mode as mine won’t. If you go to pull away in second the revs raise but then it selects first and gives you a jolt as you pull away. If you manually select first then shift up through the gears it’s perfect.

It'll just gey worse over time, mine ended up with a rebuild and new mechatronic unit & new torque converter.
