Strange sideways movement in rear suspension

Hi Guy's

When I remove a rear wheel I usually place a 2 tonne trolley jack under the rear control arm and open the drivers door to disable the EAS. The car needs to be sitting low, preferably in disembarkment height, this way I can get the foot of the jack to lodge in the pocket where the shock absorber comes thru.. Not recommended, and perhaps a lil dangerous, I know.
Lifting the wheel in this manner takes the weight off the whole rear hub assembly. In this pos I can grab the wheel and get sideways movement, Which I have found to be the pivot point where the upper arm attaches to the hub.. Looks like a pin connection that maybe needs packers either side. And, up and down movement, where I've found the lower pivot point(s) to have slackness too.
Are both these attachment points ball joints? Normal? Should they have some small movement or are they done?

Or something completely different. Neutral

Thanx Matt. Once you've driven a Range Rover, everything else seems 2nd rate.. Eeeek I'm trapped for life.

They're both significantly worn. There should be no play at all.
The joints are both ball joints.
Replacing them is covered in the forum Wiki. Paul,
